5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for a C++ programmer   February 8, 2008
As a seasoned C++ programmer going back to MS VC++ 1.5 and more recently VC++ 2005, I've had some difficulty picking up .Net and C#.
I've toyed with VB in the past, but just could not get into it, possible from a mistaken belief that C "had to be the answer".
I also tried to learn C# via online tutorials and other books but just could not get it.
At last, this is the book that has explained to me what .Net can do for me and, more importantly, explained C# to me. The book begins by explaining the various data types, finally(!) shows me what boxing and unboxing means, and then explains in a very clear manner the detail behind C++/C# features such as methods, inheritance, iterators and exceptions.
I say explains about C++/C# because many of these features are part of the C++ language but really start to make sense when applied to the C# language with its inbuilt types and heap management.
Once we have go to grips with the C# basics, the book gets into some easily understandable explanations of arrays, inheritance, garbage collection, collections (which are worth going to C# for, alone!). Finally, we get to some real-life examples.
I say "finally", but the book has done an excellent job so far in detailing the myriad features that C# has, certainly over C, and even over C++ (at least in that it seems more easily useful within C#).
The examples give a brief introduction to Windows Forms (including cool new validation features), database connections, ASP.Net for Web Pages and finally, Web Services.
The final sections are a little light on detail but, by the time we reach the end of the book, we're 539 pages in...
All in all, for a seasoned C++ programmer who believed that I needed to write custom classes for every type of collection, and do all my own garbage management because "I knew best", this has been a revelation. Since opening the book a couple of weeks ago I have had a couple of minor projects, one Windows and one ASP.Net, and I have used C# for both and the brevity of code, and speed of implementation has been fantastic.
So; if you are a C or C++ programmer, with minimal exposure to .Net, this is five out of five. If you have a fair amount of experience in C# or .Net, then it's maybe a 3 or 4 out of 5.

4 out of 5 stars A good starting point   December 12, 2007
This book has been great at getting me started on c# however the last chapters are ultimatly pointless and i would recomend getting book on the specific subjects for example the chapters on ASP.NET. However this is by no means a bad thing it does give a good over view of what the language can do.

I would recomend this to any one with little or no programming experience I have read other .net books from ms press and this is by far the best i have read for c#.

The book takes you through a pretty standard getting started type chapters and excersizes, however the explanations of every program are strong and do encourage you to try the next excersize with out the constant questions like "I know this works but why?"

Well done John Sharp will look out for more books that you have written

5 out of 5 stars This is the book for OO with .NET 2.0   November 19, 2007
This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it, its is fairly concise and has is fantastic introduction into proper development into C# 2005. The book takes you through developing with Visual Studio 2005 using OO. If you want to become a proper develper with OO this is a fairly good book for it. The only down side is the the database examples are poor and are open to SQL injection attacks (not good).

4 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to C#   September 6, 2007

I bought this book hoping it would do what it said on the cover and I was not disappointed.
This book is a very good introduction to C# that I feel I will be refering to time and time again.
There are plenty of exercises throughout the book and they really do (with just one or two exceptions) help to support your learning of C# and the topic under discussion.
John Sharp has a very enjoyable reading style that makes it a joy to learn a new language.
It's a good book to learn from whatever your programming background - with tips throughout the book to show differences between C# and C, C++ and Java.
As an aside, I've made a couple of attempts at getting into Windows technologies in the past with Programming Windows 95 with MFC and the like which were tediously dry. This author, writing about a modern language, makes Windows development look much more appealing and reduces the barrier to entry!

5 out of 5 stars Benchmark   April 13, 2007

I bought this book as a c++ programmer interested in learning c#. It is one of the few programming books I own, which is truely complete in the sense that you need to have read nothing else but this book to get on with the programming. This book is very clear, goes into enough depth to give you a good understanding, but not too deep as to bog you down, is interesting to learn from and is very, very well written. This sort of writing style should be a benchmark for all programming books rather than the usual ambiguity which is all too common in other texts. If you don't know anything about programming and want to learn c#, get this book. If you are already a programmer and want to learn c#, get this book.
