Don't buy this. Go for a Gaberoff! June 11, 2008 I found this dictionary to be virtually useless. It was a breath of fresh air to get hold of a Gaberoff dictionary. To the best of my knowledge there are no dictionaries for Brits learning Bulgarian of any serious depth. The Gaberoff is, like 99% of the dictionaries available, for Bulgarians learning English but it is easily navigated once you have mastered the alphabet. Don't waste your money on a Hippocrene!
Not enough words... December 13, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
The only saving grace for this dictionary is that it gives useful transliterations from the Cyrillic. It simply does not contain enough words to be of any practical value, even for a pocket dictionary, which it certainly is not, being too bulky. Neither does it distinguish between the same words with different meaning. So if I look up the Bulgarian for 'Spring', how do I know whether I've got the season, a curly metal object or water gushing out of a hillside? Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any really good Bulgarian-English dictionaries available. Those published in Bulgaria are aimed at Bulgarians learning English.
Basically Basic September 25, 2003 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
This may be OK for a basic holiday but it has a serious lack of depth to it, my Bulgarian wife and I have found it of no use apart from her occasionally using at as a spell checker
Basic, no-frills dictionary December 16, 1998 33 out of 33 found this review helpful
Worth the money for a basic dictionary; left me wanting something less concise but it fills its role (pocket-style dictionary). Translations are just single-word or two or three alternatives. Good format: easy to find entries (although there are no guide-words); does includes stress marks (critical for Bulgarian pronunciation). Reasonable romanization scheme if you're not confident with Cyrillic. Was sorry that there was no help with: plurals, gender (gender noted for nouns, gender variations of other classes of words not given), definite article forms, nor verb conjugation classes (there's only three patterns, why not indicate which one applies?).
