4 out of 5 stars Great for someone easily bored   February 4, 2008

I bought this CD Rom because I was going to a small Spanish village for Christmas, staying with a Spanish family and very few people in that village speak English. I have no previous experience with any language other than English. In three weeks, I had enough of a grasp to be able to hear different words when spoken. I could make myself clearly understood to children and I was able to sit at the dinner table and have some concept of what was being said around me. To me, this was success. When I bought this CD Rom, I also bought a CD/book combo which remains unopened to this day but the childish games on this software kept me entertained and motivated in the short time I had to learn. You will not learn the language from this CD Rom but you will be able to shout at airport security...and really, what more do you want if you are only going there for a two week holiday?

2 out of 5 stars Gets frustrating fast   September 4, 2007

My wife & I found this program fun for the first 3 hours or so. Then it got very frustrating. The software won't let you progress to the second set of lessons until you complete every exercise in the first set with a *perfect* score. And a lot of the exercises have very short timelimits to complete them - even when we knew the answers, we just couldn't click fast enough. We spent quite a few more frustrating hours trying & trying & trying again, but never did manage to get through everything in the allotted times.

The order of learning was also very questionable. For example, is it really necessary to memorise the Spanish names of all the flags of the countries of the world, before being even able to count to 100? Personally, I think counting to 100 is a far more valuable skill than memorising flags, but this program demands you learn the flags instead.

I emailed Eurotalk tech support, but received no reply. Zero stars for their support.

In summary, a program with great potential that never makes it across the finish line. Some fun concepts, a nice layout, but ultimately held back by an insanely rigid framework that stalls learning instead of enabling it.

This CD does state that it is for beginners & is targetted at an older market. However, it only teaches basic vocab & seemingly few, random sentences without helping you use them in context. I don't think that it is neccesarily worth the money for such a basic product in my opinion. This is the first CD-ROM I have purchased that has not inspired me to further learning. Seemingly this should truly be directed at those people who want to learn a few phrases or words to show they are trying when they visit Spanish speaking countries. It is not a useful beginning tool for actually wanting to learn more about this language. Saying that the CD is very easy to follow without the need to read the instructions.

4 out of 5 stars A novices perspective   July 24, 2001

This is a really good way to learn some basics in the language. I had no previous knowledge of Spanish. Ideal for me (age 55) and I can see it is good for children too. It has a number of "games" to improve your knowledge and score. Having help languages (other than English) is a bonus for learners from other countries. Listening to the words and phrases from a male and female "speaker" is great idea too. We have bought the World Talk CD - but we really need an intermediate level...
