Amazon.co.uk Review
With ever more people discovering the joys of Andalucia and Latin America, the boom in the learning of Spanish shows no sign of abating. Learn Spanish Now is among the better software packages in a crowded market.

The tutor comes on two CDs. One of these has key sections including "survival phrases", fun activities, conversations and speech practice against the voice of a native speaker; the other has a thorough grammar tutorial. This is a valuable combination for those serious about learning Spanish and the product is clear and easy to use. Spanish phrases are highlighted in a box and their English translations placed beneath, and the voice-recognition software allows you to measure your own voice against that of a native speaker. Although the "recognition" seems to be skewed somewhat towards Iberian pronunciation as against Latin American sounds (the complete lack of consonants in Chilean Spanish does not go down very well, for instance), it still represents a useful benchmark.

The part on survival phrases is particularly well designed and will be of much use to those who have basic Spanish. There are several practice dialogues based on commonplace situations--in the bank, the hotel, the taxi and so on--with some priceless examples that all of us must have wished we'd known at some point or other ("I've locked the key in the bedroom"). Although some of the advice borders on the infantile ("When you decide to travel outside the USA, you will probably need a passport"), much of it is useful and rounds out a well-composed package. --Toby Green

2 out of 5 stars A pile of not-so-useful-whatsname   July 19, 2008
Well, after a few weeks with Linguaphone's All-Talk CD course which I got kinda free with the Daily Mail and after a few rather fab hols in Lanzarote I got the Spanish bug. I was learnin' rather quick. Sadly I bought this software. It's really kinda poo. This is because I'm a clever kinda chap yet it's a bit of a bugger to work out. Las instruciones are kinda flippin' non-existente. Starts off in the v. deep end. Was glad I'd had some experiencia apart from this. Will stick to talkin' to the locals 'cause they're basically better at Spanish than this CD is. K I'm a bit poo at me own Inglese but I'm absolutemente you guys WILL UNDERSTAND. It's only Espanol, right?! I'm guessin' the key point is that the CD is really aimed at a South American audience. So, if you want to learn European Spanish the pronunciation ain't goin' ta be right, right?!. If you're looking for South American Spanish you've just hit the chuffin' motherlode dude! Hit it!

This is an all-round good package. There are many unlisted extras which make it great value for money. If you’ve never tried to learn a new language before, the initial approach can be a bit daunting, but with a little practice it’ll soon come to make sense. Various Spanish accents are represented, along with a choice of learning styles. So, if you want to dive into hard grammar basics or absorb as much conversational Spanish as possible ASAP, this is definitely a package to consider!

1 out of 5 stars NOT FOR BEGINNERS   January 19, 2005

This is an awful piece of software that is difficult to follow and use. I would not recommend anyone to purchase this.It is definitley not for beginners. It is intermediate level but even then I don't think its worth the price. Invest your money elsewhere.

I have just bought this package having completed a short spanish course last year. I intended to use it in addition to Michael Thomas's CDs which are excellent. However I have found this software really difficult to get in to. There seems to be no structure to the learning, it just starts with full conversations in Spanish using vocabulary and grammar that is unfamilar to a beginner. It might improve with more use, but my initial impression is that it is a big waste of money, especially if you like a structured way of learning.

I found this a very good package, especially for those with some basic spanish, you can go a long way to speaking spanish confidently with this software. The section i use most is "survival phrases" where everyday scenarios are acted out. Each sentence is highlighted as the presenter says it, with the english translation beneath it. It is possible to play each word (with translation) independently, allowing you to practice the problem words over and over. The speech recognition works far better than others i have used before. There are also sections on reading, grammar and word games, as well as more advanced plays. It is left up to the user how they want to learn, there is no set sequence to be followed, you can browse the sections and jump in anywhere you like.
There's plenty of short films to keep you busy, and while it's not movie quality, it's find for education purposes. For a complete beginner, it may be difficult to motivate oneself initially; there is no gentle introduction to the basics. The "beginner" sections do go straight in the deep end, but by taking it slow to begin with, the material is self explanatory.
Overall, well worth the extra expense over cheaper versions.
