Amazon.co.uk Review
Travel has never have been more popular, but that doesn't mean it has become any easier, which is why learning some of the language before you go remains a sensible option--even if you do find that many people in your destination speak impeccable English. Studying the Linguaphone Brazilian Portuguese in Action 2 CD-ROM will mean it's no longer necessary to be humiliated by people speaking English to you after you have mangled their language. The package is very much based around life in Brazil--it includes an excellent travel guide to some of Brazil's most famous tourist attractions together with video footage that gives a real flavour of Brazilian life.

Though the CD-ROM is packed with enhanced video content, the first port of call for most students will probably be the basics of the language, which are imparted through grammar guides and example dialogues. This is not a package for advanced students--the vocabulary of 5,000 words, while enough for most purposes, is not tailored to unusual situations and the best place to begin is with the basic phrases in Brazilian Portuguese that show the contexts of various words and parts of speech through sentence examples and role-plays. The phrases are emphasised with colour-highlighting of key parts and boxes below explain their meanings in English and the part of grammar they belong to. There is also a separate grammar section in the package which will break down the points arising from these set-piece dialogues.

Like every good language-learning software package, Linguaphone Brazilian Portuguese in Action 2 allows you to compare your pronunciation with that of a native speaker. This will help with speaking and listening as well as with grammar and sentence-construction. On the downside, the test of pronunciation is inevitably somewhat standardised and does not reflect the large variation of accents in Brazil. That aside, this is a good package for anyone who wants to learn or improve upon their Brazilian Portuguese before embarking on their next trip abroad. --Toby Green

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the language   November 6, 2005

I bought this package as I was going to Brazil and was aware that in many places the locals spoke no english. I did the course for about 3 weeks before I left. While the course isn't easy I found that I learnt a lot more Portuguese than I realised and could comprehend enough of the language to get around (book hotel rooms, eat dinner, get to places etc). The one area the course falls down is on conversational portuguese (how are you? what's your name? etc) so you might want to buy a phrase book as well.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing - key elements missing   March 23, 2005

Although the basic structure of this package seems good - as I guess has been developed for various packages, this version for Brazilian Portuguese seems to have skimped on content. None of the 3 'Titles' to choose from have any conversational content to them - that is the interactive dialogue facility - (a key feature of the advertised package). I don't even know what it does as in this package that element is completely redundant. The videos have such bad sound they are unlistenable. And there is also no area where you can concentrate on the kind of phrases a visitor in Brazil is likely to need - hotel rooms etc. It is much more aimed at students of the language, than visitors. That said, being able to highlight the words of each sentence and hear the word repeatedly is a good feature, but the minimum requirement you would expect with computer learning really...

5 out of 5 stars Excelent guide to Portuguese   May 3, 2003

I've been trying to learn Brasilian Portuguese for a while, but no one system seemed to be working just how it does now. While you study, your brain simultateously absorb the words so later is easy to remember.I'm completely satisfied wih this and strongly recommend it to anyone who hasn't never learned portuguese or anyone with need to improve it's knowledge of leanguage.
