2 out of 5 stars Could be better, but great price!   September 2, 2006

Firstly, my 4 year old does request to watch this DVD, and I notice she has picked up some of the words. She doesn't watch it all the way through now (she did the first few times), so she's very good at the French introduced in the first half! So it can't be 'too bad' - BUT:

I thought this DVD was pretty basic. Essentially it is just a long list of vocabulary accompanied by poor animation and voiceovers. I was really surprised at the lack of quality - and have only kept it as the price was so good (would never pay the full price for it!).

There's no fluency at all, just words - but I suppose the viewer hears a real French accent, which young children pick up well.

I think very small children and upwards are capable of absorbing so much - and the DVD could have been so much more. I bought Where's Boo! on DVD a while ago, and although it's a programme shown on English tv, there was a French option on the DVD - and it's great. Usborne ought to have a look at that, then go back and sort out poor Isabel!!

4 out of 5 stars My 23 month old loves it   June 22, 2006

My 23 month old daughter has been watching "Isabelle" for several months and it is a firm favourite. She watches it from end to end. She points things out to me in English but is now beginning to reply "bonjour" to the characters and I am happy that the information is going in. Just wish I'd bought the DVD not the video as it is on so much and I have a younger daughter who is not interested in TV yet. We also have the book which we use as well and she is getting the idea that there are different words for the same item in French.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad   January 24, 2006

My daughter, 3years and 4 months old, is not captured by this DVD. At first she was interested and watched it end to end but she is not keen on it being repeated. The cartoon style is OK but overall its not that good. I was looking for a DVD like the "Sing and Sign" DVD by Sasha Felix which was so well made that you can watch it again and again and the language is a by product of having fun watching a DVD. There are not many learn french DVDs about and this may be one of the best but they could do much better.

4 out of 5 stars natural french   November 28, 2005

we bought this for our daughters 3rd birthday, as we spend 3 months a yr in france and wanted our kids to speak a more natural french than we do. In the short time since, we all seem to know it off by heart, it's certainly helping my french, and i can say 'slide' in french quite well now, quite handy next time we are on holidays in the park. can they do another version to help me talk to other parents about sleep routines and feeding?...our daughter has been glued to this, and althou she had already picked up please/ thanks etc, is now surprising us by using new words in her conversation, ie pointing at a toy and saying 'that's rouge mummy'.surprisingly i'm not tired of hearing it yet and she's also learnt a lot of 'frere jacque' from the intro (as well as how to work the dvd so she now puts it on her self...)basic french but it entertains our 3yr old and is a fun way to learn.

I bought this DVD for a birthday present for a 3 year old - her whole family are raving about it - it goes on everyday and they know the songs now. They are bringing it to France with them when they come to visit as it is a must see! If their reaction is anything to go buy - I might have to buy if for my family as we are learning French too! As my little friend says "FAB"
