why can't we have zero stars? May 7, 2008 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
When I first heard 'Like a Virgin' I thought it was a novelty record by the annoyingly squeaky-voiced commedienne Sandra Dickinson (BTW she even had the Marylin M look before Madge!) and I'm still convinced it is! How can you take this embarrassing nonsense seriously? Madge obviously thinks she's so daring and original by using a naughty word in a song title ...!!?? Hardly! Not when you consider that Richard Branson had a record label and stores going more than 10 years previously when use of the word was truly groundbreaking. I cringe as I read all these overly sycophantic and dazzled reviews. This is just third rate disco music which is as bland as plain rice and a glass of water. To label these squeakily delivered tunes 'light pop' is an insult to the genre. This is way below the standard of today's current pop mediocrity - perhaps it created it? You can only praise Madonna for her financial acumen - she 's the Margaret Thatcher of the music business. Still, this doesn't stop all her output being talentless, insipid, mainstream, dull disposable muzak.
Doesn't Reach Standard of "True Blue"... April 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
...But after "Madonna" this album is a change!!!
1. Material Girl. 10/10 2. Angel. 9/10 3. Like a Virgin. 10/10 4. Over and Over. 9/10 5. Love Don't Live Here Anymore. 10/10 6. Dress You Up. 8/10 7. Shoo-Bee-Doo. 5/10 8. Pretender. 9/10 9. Stay. 9/10
"Like a Virgin" is the album which set the ball rolling, but the ball started rolling even more with "True Blue" and "Like A Prayer"
OVERALL GRADE:9/10
Madonna-Like A Virgin March 12, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
So what was Madonna meant to do after the album 'Madonna'? Just virtually repeat it again? Oh no, that's not Madonna! Although we have learnt this lesson now, we were then unaware that she insists on reinventing herself every new album that comes around. So something different was needed, thus the birth of 'Like A Virgin'. It cannot be denied when I say that this was the album that got Madonna noticed. Not only for the world wide hits off it that became giants such as 'Material Girl' as well as the title track, but also the image that she portrayed ie a punk in a wedding dress, as if Madonna was trying to look sexy but at the same time not caring less about whether she was or not. But she was, and the image worked so well. Madonna became an instant heart throb!
Unlike the first album, Madonna began to experiment with her voice and with different songs. For example, this is the first time that we see her trying out at ballads, thus softening her voice, moving her away from the one single music category that she had previously been labelled (that being bubblegum pop) to a more professional artist of originality and imagination. Even if Madonna cannot be awarded credit for writing all of the material on the album, it is she who sings the songs and makes them into what they are today - classics!
The album opens with a song that is now possibly Madonna's most commonly used nickname (along with Madge!), 'Material Girl'. This is definately one of her signiture songs, and most memorable music videos - what with catching the essence of the nothing less than gorgeous Marilyn Monroe. Madonna sings about life as being a gold digger (although not relating it to herself personally), and how basically money makes her world go round. But then to a large extent, money does make the world go round, don't you think? Madonna wants us to overlook this and see the things that do really matter in the world, as she sings on a later song, 'love makes the world go round'.
The second song is 'Angel'. A song of gratitude, appreciation and thankfulness for having a certain someone special. In my opinion this doesn't necessarily have to be about a lover. It could be a child (son/daughter), friend, family member etc. therefore displaying the great maturity of the song.
TO BE CONTINUED, WHEN I CAN BE BOTHERED
I'd say overall that it was a good album. The sound is similar to that of the previous album, but at the same time it's completely different! Personally I find it far from being her best, but it does offer a variety of sounds that you wouldn't find on the first album eg her first attempts at ballads. Anyway, yes it is definately worth a listen.
My personal ratings:
Material Girl 3/5 Angel 4/5 Like A Virgin 2/5 Over And Over 3/5 Love Don't Live Here Anymore (Remix) 3/5 Dress You Up 3/5 Shoo-Bee-Doo 3/5 Pretender 3/5 Stay 3/5

This is the album that made Madonna a bona fide star but it is definitely not my favourite. It's her most bubblegum album, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but as a whole the album just doesn't stand up.There are, however, some great songs. Like a Virgin is a classic, although it's been so overplayed now I find it hard to enjoy. Material Girl is also great, although, much to Madonna's annoyance, it spawned the nickname that she still hasn't managed to get rid of. The other two singles, Angel and Dress You Up, are also really good. In fact, Dress You Up is one of my personal favourites. The one area where this album surpasses all Madonna's others is, however, in the cover art. I love the front cover but the back is even better and, in my opinion, one of the best photos of Madonna in existence.
