Its the flaming lips, so as the title of this review suggests, the very notion of it being anything but fantastic is ridiculous, but this box set truly is the best thing since sliced bread.

The e.p is a wonderful introduction to the Lips, and shows the potential they had straight away.

Hear it is, the first album, is quite frankly the weirdest, most hypnotic mess of cosmic rock, punk and downright euphoria that you will ever heard.

Oh My Gawd is, as you will know if you have read my review of it, one of my favourite albums of all time, and i shant praise it anymore, just listen to it, and become a Coyne convert like me.

Telepathic Surgery is another beautiful album, maybe less accesible than the previous 2, but tracks like UFO Story and Chrome Plated Suicide really show the variety the Lips have in they're arsenal.

The bonus tracks, on the end of each disc, are amazing, both live versions of album tracks and wonderful covers, After The Gold Rush and the live version of Jesus Shooting Heroin proving especially special.

All in all, its 3 discs of religious scripture, and after listening, i guarantee you will never think or act the same again.

well, what to say about this...

the first time i heard the flaming lips properly was when i listened to the soft bulletin at my brothers house a few years back. i wasnt blown away, but i bought the album when i saw it next, and it changed my life. its an amazing album, and the follow up, yoshimi battles the pink robots, is even better.

this set is ideal for people who want a taste of what the lips were about back in the olden days, giving you the ep and 3 early albums, plus loads of bonus tracks, including the greatest live performance of all time, that of jesus shootin heroin.

wayne coynes voice is truly amazing on all the tracks he sings on, he can go from angelic to deadly in an instant, and truly deserves the plaudits he is now receiving

the production, even on the earlier songs, is amazingly good, and does justice to the sound

i struggle to find fault with anything the lips do, being as they are, in my opinion, the greatest band ever!!!

long live wayne coyne and the lips, this is awesome, powerful stuff, and makes all other bands look that little bit less talented.

Buy it, Love it, Drop acid whilst listening to it!!

WOW. This box set is fantastic. I bought it after being introduced to The Flaming Lips through Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (latest masterpiece) and boy was I surprised. It's like nothing I've ever heard before and very very different from the chilled out music on Yoshimi. I sat down for over 3 hours straight and listened right through. Songs like With You, My Own Planet and the snappily titled Jesus Shootin' Heroine are works of genius, but they aren't stand out tracks. There is no such thing as a stand out track where these guys are concerned, since 1980, so it seems, they haven't got an average song to their name. They're consistently original and no two songs sound alike. The greatest band of our time.

for any hardcore flaming lips fan this really is an album you cant live without, seriously. The album takes you on a magical journey from the very begining of the flaming lips up until 1988 where you have to buy the next CD (the day we shot a hole in the jesus egg). This boxset not only contains the original album material but also outakes, demo's, remixes and comments from the flaming lips. Even if you own the original albums i still would definatly suggest buying this. for all you new flips fans, these albums are nothing like "yoshimi battles the pink robots" which is amazing, so if your expecting dance music, think again this is rock at its best !!!!!

the flaming lips are one of the worlds greatest bands. but i am not going to pretend that their early offerings are anywhere near as good as the genius of yoshimi..., the soft bulletin, clouds..., transmissions..., or even hit to death..., but its still worth a listen. and thankfully some clever so-and-so has put it all on one 3-disc compilation. if nothing else, at least this saves money for newer fans looking to buy out the lips' back catalogue.

just don't be expecting another soft bulletin...
