For the history of The Lilac Time and the background to this album, refer to Stephen Duffy's sleevenotes. Duffy has belatedly received a little acclaim through his work with Robbie Williams and whatever you think of Williams, it has to be said his taste in collaborators is impeccable.
Duffy has written a clutch of brilliant albums, but this one has a special magic. There's a slightly desultory feel - perhaps explained by Duffy's explanation that the album's budget was slashed midway through recording - but the quality never falters. Fields, I Went To The Dance, Trinity and It'll End In Tears are all great songs. And On We Go is even better, while Paper Boat truly deserves to be called sublime.
In this remastered version, there are also bonus tracks and BBC sessions and you'll need them because if you make the wise decision to purchase this album, before you know it you'll be a completionist!
