Make No Mistake - This Is The Real Deal !!! June 15, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
After following his career for over 30 years & going to see him live on various occasions when he graces these shores, the Voice of Rock presents us with a tremendous, funky, heavy and extremely varied selection of first class `Soul Movers'. For the younger, unfamiliar listeners interested in this living legend, I suggest you listen to the tremendous opener `The Valiant Denial' then move on to `Black Light' check out his amazing rendition of `Nights In White Satin' & finish with the stunning acoustic guitar led `The Divine' to get a glimpse of the genius that is Glenn Hughes, the guy who propelled Deep Purple into a different league, when they were privileged enough to share the same stage as him. He is a unique voice and talent in top form, what more can I say, I just love the man, you must try to catch him live in an intimate venue like the Mean Fiddler, to appreciate the awesome power, talent, enthusiasm & conviction with which he plays. He is & will forever be, the true `Voice of Rock', often imitated, never matched & needless to say, never bettered.

This is the first glenn hughes album iv'e bought, but i think its a corker,it says on the cover that this is his career defining album, personally i hope not because i want to here more of this guy.You would not believe it but this was recored in a mansion in the hollywood hills,it just sounds fantastic and glenns voice is AWESOME,standout tracks are YOU GOT SOUL,MONKEY MAN,FRAIL and THE DIVINE but to be honest there all excellent...
One of the best releases of 2006 November 16, 2006 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'd already heard a few snippets of this CD before I bought it, and they convinced me that this was an album as worthy as Glenn's previous release, Soul Mover. There, is, however, more diversity on this recording. It starts off with a spacey Rush - like track, 'The Valiant Denial', moves on to the heavy funk/metal of 'Steppin On' and then you here acoustic songs such as 'This House', a track that reminds me of Crosby Stills & Nash. My three favourite tracks on the CD, though, are the acoustic/electric sounding 'Frail', the spacey 'Black Light' and 'Too High', which is a combination of a heavy, riffy verse and a rather psychedelic sounding chorus with lots of wah-wah pedal guitar. Glenn's version of 'Nights in White Satin' is heavier/more intense than the original, and the CD rounds off with an emotional acoustic guitar only song - 'The Divine.' For song quality and diversity, this must indeed be, as it says on the cover, Glenn Hughes's career-defining album. On repeated playing, the songs really do tend to stay in the head, and many are quite evocative. Definately worth a purchase.
Disappointing to say the least November 1, 2006 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Yes..I bougth the cd because of the " career defining " blurb....Having seen him with Joe Lynn Turner a few years ago and being amazed by his voice I hoped for something awesome. However with this offering ,by the time " Nights in white satin" came on I was losing the will to live. He can write some great songs..but is it me or am I missing the point with this one ?
Dismantling the hype September 7, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Well almost. After loving every track on Soul Mover, I was eagerly awaiting Glenn Hughes "career defining" album (so said the blurb). But I'm afraid I cannot find the charity to score this outing more than a '3/5 average', basically as it does not match the intensity and writing skill displayed by the previous album. Particularly the vocals which could almost be considered a tad bland compared to Soul Mover.
I am at a loss to understand what Glenn was trying to achieve with the compilation of tracks to be honest - individually they are OK - but as a collection, the album is not terribly cohesive. Don't think I dislike the album or the songs or indeed Glenns immense voice and musical ability. But for goodness sake, don't buy this thinking you're getting the best of Hughes.
Advice? Buy Soul Mover; buy Iommi's Fused album - there you'll find Hughes at his very alround best.
