5 out of 5 stars Brilliant   April 24, 2008

I first discovered Brandi via the Amazon Vine programme that supplied me with a copy of her second album 'The Story' free of charge. It blew me away and has seldom been out of my CD player and iPod since. Research directed me to this earlier effort which has not been released in the UK. Ordered this from an Amazon partner (actual Amazon price is ridiculous). Like 'The Story' Brandi's singing is excellent in this album, but overall there are no songs that stand out as much as 'The Story' and 'Turpentine' do on the newer CD. Don't let that put you off, just order both.

Brandi Carlile is going to be HUGE, and if you listen to this album you'll find out why. She has an amazing voice, and she and her working partners Tim and Phil Hanseroth have put together an fabulous album of contemporary, rock-tinged folk with attitude. But this ain't folk-rock! This is a collection of brilliant songs, full of grace and passion, packed with unforgettable melodies and hooks. Brandi has been making a name for herself in the States with her live show, which she opened last year with her sparse cover of the Elton John/Bernie Taupin early classic 60 Years On (added as a bonus track to this tour edition of the album). But, and here's the thing, you end up liking her own stuff so much more. Buy this and it wont be off your CD player for months (and then there's the new album due out on April). Why this has not been released in the UK is a mystery. Columbia Records are out of touch!! Buy it anyway, you'll be so glad that you did. You're going to love her sooner or later, so it may as well be sooner!
