Excellent,the best album ive heard in ages March 2, 2008

I picked this album up awhile ago,noticing Andy's name from playing with Clapton, and i have to say im glad i did. The whole album is surperb easy listening,not technical, just straight up easy listening. Theres not a bad song on the album. It neither sounds like Clapton or Rodger Waters just something quite different.I highly recommend it!

This really is a great album from AFL, perhaps this county's most underrated artist. A great singer and guitarist plus fantastic songwriter. Do yourself a favour and buy this today. You'll thank me, I promise you!

I got to know Andy and the rest of Amen Corner when they used to play at the Wickham Hall in Romford on a Saturday night (way back in the 60s). In the break I would sometimes have a drink and a chat with him. I knew they were good then and they were only just making it. It became obvious that they had cracked it when Andy gave me complimentary tickets to see them at The Tiles in Oxford Street. I liked his stuff when he was younger and I have followed his career with interest, even though he generally does session work for other artists including my favourite Eric Clapton. Andy's new album has not let him down it is a gem.......more please mate!!!

Now this is a really nice album. I have to say that I was more than a little apprehensive when I heard that Andy Fairweather-Low was putting out his first new album in over 25 years, in fact since 1980's 'Mega Shebang', especially since 'Wide Eyed And Legless : The A&M Recordings' bought back so many memories and reminded me just how good he was as a solo artist back then. From his earliest times with Amen Corner in the 60's and the brief stint as 'Fairweather' in the early 70's, this guy has always come up with the goods, and I must say that this album doesn't let the side down one bit.
'Sweet Soulful Music' may not truly sum up the album, since you only have to listen to the album opener 'One More Rocket', a real rock 'n' roller which reminds me more than a little of 'Subterranean Homesick Blues'. Ironically enough, the only other real uptempo track is 'Sweet Soulful Music' itself, another pounding 2-beat rocker. For me though, one of the nicest things about this album is that you can listen to almost any song, and it has echoes of material from previous albums.
Some cynics might take this to mean that Andy Fairweather Low hasn't 'progressed', hasn't 'moved with the times', but how many times have you bought a new album from a favourite artist, only to find that they've completely changed direction, they've lost you, and you hate it!
As corny as this might sound, this album for me almost from the first listen, was like catching up with an old friend or putting on my favourite slippers. The album just felt comfortable, and I am completely OK with that, since you don't want every new album you pick up to be revolutionary and leave you feeling as though you've been hit over the back of the head with a bat. Basically what I'm trying to say is, if you've got a winning formula, stick with it, and this AFL album does just that.
Apart from the two livelier tracks already mentioned, the rest of the tracks could be more accurately described as 'sweet' and 'soulful', and whilst this makes for great late-night listening, I have been driving around with this album in the car stereo for the past few days, and there is no doubt about it, this is quality stuff! Glyn Johns is still in the hot seat as he was on the second and third albums looking after the Production and Engineering side of things, and I can recognise at least a couple of names from earlier solo outings which may of course go some way in explaining why the album sounds the way it does.
Vocally, I've always thought that early Andy Fairweather-Low sounds a little like Sting, (or vice-versa), but all I can say to sum up is, if you're reading this Andy, if you keep putting out albums like this, I am sure as hell going to keep on buying them!

I bought 'La Booga Rooga' back in the 70s and loved it. Of course, Andy was no stranger to the spotlight even then but boy did he have what it takes to do something magical with a tune and some words. So with this in mind, I bought 'Sweet Soulful Music'. Wow! 30 years on, older and wiser he may be but the songs on this new CD are simply divine. Moving on from the funk-edge that was 'Rooga', I'd say 'Soulful' is more rootsy, vaguely Cooder-esque. But Andy's definitely his own man here. Can't wait to hear these songs live when Andy goes on tour in the UK [October / November 2006]. Enjoy!
