4 out of 5 stars A triumph of substance equalling style ...   April 20, 2008

Almost single-handedly defined 'art rock', Roxy burst onto the music scene with a slew of excitingly original singles, top-selling albums, and eye-catching performance. The grainy, lip-synched footage of the band, Eno already resplendent in boa and feathers, live at the Royal College of Art in '72 is relatively restrained, tentative even, but the pace gathered swiftly for resultant glammed-up forays into period Brit music TV: the OGWT, Mike Mansfield's Supersonic and silly old Top Of The Pops. The need to be seen as well as heard doing something different prompted above average churn in the costume dept., adding to the fun no end. Mackay is a cross between an alien and a fly; Eno, a camp Riff Raff; meaty drummer Paul Thompson distinctly uneasy in a leopard-skin; while Ferry works his way through rock 'n roll T-shirt 'n jeans, GI uniform (with eye patch), the famous crooner's white tux and, on the second of this 2 disc set, suits of red leather and silk, the camera lingering longingly on the pale grey eyes, the Cartier watch. The hits are present (Love Is The Drug, Pyjamarama, Do The The Strand, Virginia Plain, Angel Eyes, Jealous Guy, Dance Away) complemented by highlight faves from the set lists of the day. If the TV material is perhaps a tad self-knowing, any whiff of contrivance is blown away by the live material, notably from Germany's Musikladen 1974 TV show and a concert in Stockholm two years later, affirming the band's reputation for tough, proficient stagecraft. Roxy in the '80s were of the time: slicker, more polished and mechanical, showing some compromise in the trademark innovation of the previous decade as the safe money rolled in (see also Genesis). Nonetheless this 10-year career overview is solid entertainment. Whilst they may have been in thrall of the dressing-up box, 'The Thrill Of It All' measures the substance of Roxy Music equalling the style.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended   February 13, 2008
Great value DVD from unquestionably one of the most influential - and best - pop/rock bands there has ever been. Covering all aspects of their career, highlights include Virginia Plain (from Top of the Pops), Do The Strand and In Every Dream Home a Heartache (from Old Grey Whistle Test), Out of the Blue (live), Same Old Scene (promo video), My Only Love (live) and More Than This (promo video). They still sound (and look) great after all these years - a real treat!

5 out of 5 stars As good as a commercial collection could be expected   December 25, 2007
It's great to be able to have a DVD with most of the gems all in one place.

Highlights for me are the early years in the highest quality I've ever seen them, especially remake/remodel, and the eye-patch-but-still-cool Ferry.

Not as interesting as the extremely rare 'A Perfumed Sigh' compilation, but very good indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Swift is right!   December 11, 2007
Total agreement with the previous reviewer. I was really looking forward to this as being the DVD equivalent of the Thrill of It All CD from a few years back. Unfortunately, while there are undoubted gems, there are also some gaps. Highlights are Ferry loping down some stairs at the start of Trash (much to Manzo's amusement); Ferry with some crazy eyebrow topiary in Manchester, making him look like like a Japanese Mr Spock); Ferry off his nut in Sweden. However we've had some great postings on youtube recently and the collection on that site seems to be far wider and richer than the collection on this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Good - but could be better!   November 30, 2007

Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry habve always been a monument to lost opportunity when it comes to video releases. Witness the numerous snippets of songs on the 'Total Recall' video and some of the notable absences - admittedly rectified here - on 1995's 'Video Collection'. This is a comprehensive collection but I'd have preferred less of the performances already available on existing DVDs (1979's 'On the Road', 'The High Road' and the recent Musikladen compilation) and more rare TV output. For example, the 1980 German performance of 'The Thrill of It All' was better than the version included on this release. Furthermore, if we're going to regurgitate so much from existing DVDs, the excellent live version of 'All I want is You' available on the Musikladen DVD is far superior to the mimed TOTP performance, though admittedly this is worthy of inclusion if only to witness Bryan Ferry in T shirt and jeans!
Whilst ITV's Supersonic 'eye patch' performance of Love Is the Drug is equally unique, the amount of the song included is lamentable and, as one of Roxy's best loved songs, must surely have commanded a more representative performance.
Finally, the superb TV performance of 'In The Midnight Hour' is a dreadful omission as is the promo for 'Dance Away' which has the same theme as that for 'Trash', though understandably less vibrant! The Abba in Switzerland performance of 'Dance Away', whilst mimed, is nevertheless polished and worthy of inclusion but if we can have bonus promos of 'Avalon' and 'The Main Thing' (live versions of which are included in this release) why not include the 'Dance Away' promo as a bonus too?
In short, this is not the definitive collection it purports to be but will form a much loved place in fans' collections.
