| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review Superbad, for many, was the surprise hit of the year. Yet when you consider the comedy pedigree sitting behind the camera, perhaps it's not that much of a turn up. Director Greg Mottola, for instance, cut his teeth on episodes of Arrested Development and the underrated US show Undeclared. Co-writer Evan Goldberg has credits on the US Ali G show, while his partner in scribe is Seth Rogen, star of 2007's other breakout comedy, Knocked Up. And with that film's director, Judd Apatow, also on the production team, it's understandable to see where Superbad gets its quality from. Yet in spite of all of these names behind the camera, Superbad is powered by Jonah Hill, previously seen in mainly supporting roles, as the foul-mothed Seth. In conjunction with Michael Cera's Evan, he bursts his way through a film that sees the pair of them trying to buy booze to go to a girl-filled party, before they go their separate ways to college. Hill and Cera are strong in their lead roles, and keep Superbad motoring even through its quieter moments. But the scene stealer has to be Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fogell, or--courtesy of his fake ID--McLovin. When he encounters two cops, played by Rogen and Bill Hader, comedy gold swiftly ensues. Superbad isn't as consistently funny as Knocked Up, and its running time may outstay its welcome a little, but it's still a tough film to knock. It's simple and straightforward aim, to sit on your screen and generate plenty of laughs, is comfortably achieved, and its rewatch value is high as well. Well worth a look. --Simon Brew

Worst Film Ever August 28, 2008 Firstly, i didn't expect much when this film started and much to my suprise my expectations grew worse as the film continued.
There are jokes that will make you laugh, but only if you have the intelligence lower than a 5 year old with severe learning difficulties. Now don't get me wrong, i have enjoyed previous films made by the same people, it's just that everything about the film is lack-lustre, from the performances to the script.
It seems that the writers just tried to make a film that would attract people because of their previous successes.
So i strongly recommend you go elsewhere if you want a comedy, as the only thing funny about this debacle is the attempt the actors make to save their credibility.
like a funnier american pie August 26, 2008 OK so i don't normally go in for these types of films. I thought american pie had its occassional funny moments but was a bit slapstick cringey. Superbad is just a whole other thing - it's so easy to be cynical about another teen comedy but this you really have to see with an open mind. It made me laugh SO much! The characters are totally believable and likeable, the plot is nothing special but there are so many little twists and running jokes that it just totally holds your attention. It's may not be deep but it is funny and it certainly is clever.
Amazing! August 26, 2008 Such a good film! if you films like, anchorman, old school, knocked up and other films like that then you'll love this! its absolutely hillarious!
Adequate August 19, 2008 Superbad is unique amongst its kind in the sense that it classically injects the right dose of teen humour whilst at the same time applies direction to the plot. The film is set over one day, which means there is a lot going on, which equals a higher volume of jokes. While upopularity is spawned from its tendancy to go too far down the 'slap-stick' road, such as bottles being thrown at old women and people getting hit on their ass by reversing cars, the film mirrors the issue with a myriad of witty punch lines and unexpected turns.
The main plot consists of three 'losers' undertaking the unfitting task of providing alcohol for a house party at which they beleive they will bed one the ladies at the end of the night. Of course this all goes hilariously wrong as we follow the three seperate adventures that the characters undertake as their plans to arrive heroically with bags of booze disintegrate along with their hopes of scoring.
At times, the movie appears shockingly daft and imposes a rather dumb atmosphere on the viewer, yet the sheer bluntness of the character portrayal and some hope of originality makes it fulfilling and enjoyable to watch. Well worth buying!
Supergood - an instant classic for those who 'get it'. August 8, 2008 Superbad is not for everyone.
The one star reviews here demonstrate that a certain percentage of the poplace is just not going to get this movie - fair do's, to each their own.
However, there are many who perceive Superbad to be an instant comedy classic and the funniest film of the decade so far. I'm one of those people.
The film was many years in development, which comes across in the character development and interwoven storyline. Not that this is a complex story, by any means. It's a very simple premise of three guys who need to buy liquor for their grad party. The beauty of the film is not in what they are doing, but in how they do it.
The three main characters are well cast and genuinely funny - Christopher Mintz-Platz in his debut role (Mclovin!) is a scene stealer and the laurel and hardy-esque pairing of Jonah Hill and Michael Cera (as Seth and Evan) gives this film a solid backbone, a great platform for the filmakers to introduce a wierd and wonderful array of supporting characters into the mix - including co-writer Seth Rogan and Bill Hader as a pair of crazy cops.
Behind the comedic vulgarity and Animal House / American Pie facade, this film succeeds because it has a heart. As the action continues, we realise that this is also a veiled coming-of-age drama.
The filmakers have approached their subject with an obvious dedication to make this film something more than just another teen comedy.
A funky soundtrack and vintage 70's feel (although the movie is set in the present day) complete the package.
This film has that rare rewatchable quality which will demand repeated viewings time and time again, to those who love it.
Superbad is supergood. 5/5
