4 out of 5 stars WARNING!!!   March 8, 2004

Ok, I bought this game from Amazon a while back. I played it on my Fujitsu Siemens T-Bird desktop over many very enjoyable hours.

The game itself is more of the same after EF I with some interesting character interaction and the use of a tricorder to get out of situations being the most notable.

However this game requires that you have a graphics card that is OpenGl supportive. I had to search for many hours to find an appropriate driver to run the game.

Then I bought myself a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop. It has an Intel graphics chipset, which i have just discovered will NOT run Elite Force II and indeed may cause system wide disruption when attemtped. I have seen some of those disruptions in my computer already.

To surmise, its a cracker of a game but if you have an Intel card, forget it. Indeed, there doesnt seem to be much info regarding technical requirments on the Amazon page.

So great game but buyer beware!

Although not been playing this game long, I am enjoying the experience. As a star trek: next generation fan you easily get a feel for the characters and locations (roaming round the enterprise is cool geekness!). Started playing a level and completed it only to realise it was a holographic simulation when completed. Nice voice overs from Patrick Stewart (Jean-luc) and good voices throughout. Graphically. Hmmm. After recently playing Max Payne 2 I have to say the graphics, although highly detailed and lovely to look at just dont quite cut it for me. Especially with the stencil shadows switched on. The shadows which whould should add mood and realism tend too look a bit odd and strangely disconcerting sometimes. I personally think the Quake3 engine needs ditching and is past its day. Musically unless my sound card isn't working properly (Vvery possible) where is the big sweeping orchestrations?. There is no satisfying rising zzzzziiipp when you top up your energy or weapons. Computer 2600 xp, 512mb corsair, radeon 9800. To summarise. Graphics: Very nice, turn off shadows, not worth losing frames. Music: ? Gameplay: Loving it up to now, absorbing and will stay in my cd tray till completed.

3 out of 5 stars ST : Elite Force 2   December 22, 2003

The original Elite Force was a long way from eing "excellent" - while it looked nice, it was far too short.

Elite Force 2 is a bit more in the same vein. The game is longer than its predecessor, although the lengthy storyline cut-scenes do become quite annoying later in the game. There are at least 2 cut-scenes which last around 4-5 minutes each; plenty of time to be tempted to press Escape while you're twiddling your thumbs and slightly too long a lull from the action. EF2 does look good, however, with very impressive texturing, effects, and animation. My beloved hand-phaser from Elite Force 1 also makes a re-appearance - perfect for a challenge. Elite Force 2 is also fairly difficult, which adds to the longevity if you're feeling brave. A few small puzzle elements are flung in, and in general, it feels as if some extra time was spent on this one

3 out of 5 stars More of the same but still good Trekkie fun   October 31, 2003

If you liked the first Elite Force, you should enjoy this one but don't expect anything particularly new. In fact, there are a few things that aren't as good as the original Elite Force. Firstly, the protagonist, Monroe, can't be a woman - much to wife's disappointment (yeah, thanks Raven Games for making gaming even less appealing to women). Secondly, saving the game mid-play isn't as quick and easy as it was. Thirdly, there's only 2 cast members' voices - Tuvok and Picard - in the game whereas the original had all the major characters from Voyager. I enjoyed the game but not as much as I enjoyed the first one. Let's hope there's a return to form for a 3rd instalment!

I loved the original but this is truly awful. The graphics may be better but the gameplay is terrible. The puzzles are simplistic, the enemy AI consists of hiding behind something or running straight at you, and gamplay is kill a few baddies and then get to the boss. However what made playing the game even more difficult is the love triangle plotline between Monroe, Telsia and the wonky walking Idryll scientist who wears next to nothing. It reduced a slightly entertaining game to a cheesy teenage boy fantasy.

Save your money.
