Just the best game I've played. August 21, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First of all, I've played all three games, Gta3, Vice City and San Andreas. I would agree with the posters who walk about character and humour being in this game. You can, like The Simpsons have favourite characters, there are so many. Mine is Ken. And that it really evokes the 80's period so brilliantly. It satirises and goes beyond just being a game. San Andreas is bigger, sure, but i just don't really care about the characters that much, and that is a big problem when the game is so huge!. I haven't found a character I like in SA, and I want to! Maybe SA is a better game, much bigger playing area, more weapons, vehicles etc, and if that is important to you in a game then get SA, but Vice is more than a game, I think. The look and the sound of Vice is so slick, maybe American 80's is just more iconic and therefore easier to lampoon, but early 90's LA doesn't have that same base for satire in the same as Vice City does. Don't get me wrong, SA is an amazing game, but Vice is just more than a game. Its all the the little touches, like the C64 loading screen at the beginning. Vice is the game that made Rockstar games what they are. It was seminal. San Andreas, merely repeats the formula with different values in the parameters that Vice created. Hey, I am probably biased, the fact that people are so keen to defend these games tells you they have got to have something, whether you like them or not. Rant over, just play, and enjoy, whichever one you choose.
good but could be better August 10, 2007 The game is great but the fact that the missions haveto be done in a certian order ruins it as i am stuck on a mission and can not go further. I would strongly advise buying a memory card alongside this game.
if i could give it 100 stars i would June 17, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I would like to point out that this is not me being biased towards this game and also that I have played most of the games that are similar including the other gta's in the series.
This game is without doubt the best game I have ever and I think will ever play in my life. Every fibre of its construction from the cars and bikes to the funky and brilliant weapons. This game is set in 80's America where you are Tommy vercetti seeking revenge in the big city (as well as little cash and destruction on the side!). This game has so many missions and sides that it is bound to keep you entertained. I found that this was the only game that I can still play over and ever. My bordem threshold for this game is extensive and I think that I will continue to play this game when I am in my ageing years! Please don't think that you might as well buy San Andreas rather than this because you will be missing out on playing this truly magnificent game. The reason I think that separates this game fro its contenders is its fantastic radio stations that have so much to offer in terms of comedy and great 80's music. This game was a landmark for the ps2 and it will remain to be so. I could not recommend this game enough to anyone who feels compelled to get in a car and have the police in hot pursuit or simply walk around the city with a minigun and cause havoc. There is no other game that I have played that has ever reached this standard in terms of game play and pure ongoing enjoyment.
A strong contender for my favourite video game of all time June 5, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First of all, I would like to say that I have loved everyone of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy (although personally I prefer to class it as one game), they have all got some unique quality to them that I like one more than the other, but if I was forced to say which one was my favourite and judging them on the first time that I played each one all the way through to the end, I would say this. I would also say that I have never been as excited about the release of a game as I was with this one, and the great thing was after all the hype at the time and all my expectations it definitely lived up to them.
The reason for me choosing this ahead of the other two as my favourite of the trilogy is for a start I prefered all the characters in it and although San Andreas had some fine acting talents involved, I just thought that this one had a better variety of actors overall. Like I said, I really loved all the characters in this, it was just full of them, they had tons of charisma, massive egos and larger than life personalities. Another reason for this being my favourite GTA is that it recreates the 1980's brilliantly (trust me I know, it was my childhood) in a videogame world kind of way for so many reasons, first of all the music is part of this and the reason for this is because all the different radio stations have at least one thing in common and that is that every music track that they play (apart from a few from the late 1970's) is from exactly that time period (1980's), the point that I'm making here is that although some of the music tracks from San Andreas was from that specific time period (1990's, again I should know as I remember this decade well), there was also a lot of music on that games radio stations that was from the 1970's and 1980's and so it did not recreate the 1990's anywhere near the way that Vice City recreated the 1980's (hope I am not confusing you), okay I will admit that in reality the 1980's had a huge personality anyway compared to the 1990's but still felt that had the majority of music tracks in San Andreas actually been from the 1990's, then like this it would have added to my enjoyment of the game.
Another reason for Vice City being my favourite, is that a videogame has never made me laugh as much as this one has. I can remember when I first played this and apart from a few, not really taking much notice of the commercials on the radio stations as I was to busy enjoying the gameplay, I just couldn't believe how clever and accurate they were, that and the fact that they were done in a very serious way and so they sounded like real adverts which just made them all the more funny, there really are so many of them in this game that make my ribs tickle that I don't think I can pick a favourite, below are just a few examples of many that even today and all the times that I hear them, never fail to make me almost laugh to the point of crying.
Domestibot (A robot that helps around the house).
The Evangelist (Pastor Richards) asking for your money.
Avery Carrington (Burt Reynolds does this magnificently) advertising properties with jakuzis.
The Yuppie and the Alien (A fictional 1980's cop show).
Seriously I am not exagerating when I say that there must be at least more than fifty (I am going to add them all up one day) of these some longer than others, but again like I said this is another reason why this does the 1980's better than San Andreas does the 1990's and I also think that the Radio DJ's have got much more enthusiasm for their own particular style of music than on San Andreas.
All this and I haven't even got round to mentioning the actual gameplay, but I am guessing that if you are reading this then you will more than likely know what the GTA games are all about, but if for some reason you don't know, to put it simply they are the greatest by far out of all the free roaming, violent gangster themed games. All the other free roaming gangster clones, no matter how hard they try just cannot compete with GTA, I have played a few and just find them boring compared to this, for example another thing that makes GTA stand out from these type of games is the fact that every street and building is completely unique (on the outside at least), there is no laziness in the design of the city. Then there is all the lovely little touches that I haven't even mentioned like the way in which you can jump into a vehicle and it moves before your game character has even sat down properly and the way in which the characters hair and clothes blow in the wind when they are on a motorbike. Then there was another GTA first, flying in a helicopter, not a big deal now but at the time it really was something special. There is one thing that I didn't like about this game and that was when the ending credits came on the screen as I just didn't want this game to end, it was a rare emotional video game moment.
So there it is, a fantastic game and lets just hope that Rockstar keep up this very high standard in the future.
To be honest, don't bother. April 30, 2007 1 out of 12 found this review helpful
Unless you really want this game, don't bother getting it. Reason 1: GTA San Andreas is out now? Why not get that or get ready for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC GTA IV? Reason 2: I just thought the gameplay was crappy. Sorry.
Anyway, the game is ok overall, but the worst of the three of PS2. GTA III was the best!
