It's the game we've all been waiting ages for. GTA 4 is one of the reasons i bought a PS3. The Grand Theft Auto games on the PS2 were instant classics and after immersing myself in GTA 4, i can safely say this one - the next chapter in an awesome series - lives up to all my expectations.
The anticipation for this game was immense, and on release day i was straight down to the shops to get my hands on a copy. But what about the game itself? Well, if there was one word i could use to sum up the new features it would be 'realism'. What makes GTA 4 so good is that it draws on the more realistic features of clones like Mafia and The Getaway while at the same time completely maintains the sense of fun and adventure that made the GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas so good. It's a perfect blend - an immense, living, breathing city, driving, action, fighting - what more could you want?
There's a few tweaks to the controls and cars now feel more weighty, requiring more skill to manouvere and damage is more realistic; gone are the days of instant explosions. One of the best new features is the GPS/Sat Nav system which cleverly plots a course to your destination and is an immediate aid.
The combat system has also had a nice overhaul with a cover system and a more precise aiming system. Hand to hand combat as well as the physicality of your character in actions like running is especially more realistic, adding a more human feel to the character an understanding of what he can and can't do. There's also online too, featuring numerous mini games such as deathmatch.
And the graphics... just wow! the past GTA's always lacked a little in this respect but we accepted it because of their immense scope but what we have in GTA 4 is just breathtaking. A day-to-night time system adds variety to the city and the water looks almost photo-real. The game above all, is all about depth and you can find it on every street, many buildings offering enteriors you can enter on missions and then return to in your free time later on.
And the story/characters - both are a great success. You warm immediately to the guy you play as, Niko - his banter with cousin Roman adding that classic GTA comedy factor that always brings a smile to your face while you're playing. There's much more free choice here too, you have to make choices, go out with a girlfriend or help your cousin. Failed missions are also instantly replayable via your phone (a great feature by the way) and offer different dialogue each time.
All in all, GTA 4 is all you loved about its prequels, and so much more. The new controls and features might take a while to get used to but the missions follow a gentle learning curve and you soon become enthralled in Niko's story and the opportunities Liberty City offers. Once again the Grand Theft Auto series delivers on so many levels, sealing this game's place yet another classic. An absolute must buy!

This game is the best to date, next gen - graphics, awesome gameplay, and a eastern European illegal immigrant and former soldier Niko Balstic, a man who is promised the American dream, but after meeting his low life cousin already here for years and is nothing but a taxi driver, Niko becomes a hired goon for some of the notorious king pins Liberty City has to offer. Thats right Liberty City, from GTA III except its remodeled its based hugely on NEW YORK CITY, but all the landmarks are there except they all have new names, Statue of Liberty move over, cause the statue of happiness is here! The whole map is a bit smaller then San Andreas but its a lot lot more detailed you will hardly ever see the same person twice . The characters are unique, funny, sarcastic and they all have there own personallites Heres whats new, you can duck for cover, instead of the unrealistic Pay 'N'Spay you must get out of the police search area, and hide out, you can't just simply open a car door and drive off you have to smash the window and hotwire it by pressing the button sequences.
You now a mobile which allows u to take photos and surf the net, you can then date online, the AI for this unique your date will recognize if you wear the same clothes on the same dates, if you treat them with respect and please them on dates they will give u access to certain perks like a lawyer will help get u out of a tight spot and having a nurse can be a lifesaver literally, and some FUN id you know what i mean!!!
FINALLY!!! multiplayer is now on GTA's franchise up to sixteen players a game and cops vs crooks, races , and a few others i didnt bother looking at theres too much on the palate. It takes at least 30 hours for the main story i heard, i've only played 4 missions! The map is too extravagantly huge, detailed, captivated, enticing whatever you wanna call it.
The vehicles are very realistic in the handling, however unlike the other games there will be no bicycles, parachutes, or tanks in the game, and planes are a big no no, but there is a huge amount of helicopters and cars and Motorbikes and all things you know and love from before.
The 360 and ps3 version have no big differences, except on the ps3 the graphics are sharper and smoother and the load times are shorter and less frequent (i guess cause u HAVE to do a 10 minute update at the start).
Overall a great games estimated to sell 10's of millions in the first 3 months and estimated to make more then movie blockbusters to bring in a whopping 380 million dollars in the first two quarters, rated ten out of ten by 97.84% of all sites so far and no i'm not making it up.
I suggest you buy now before its too late, a game you simply have to play if u don't own a 360 OR PS3 then go buy them with this package!!!!!!!!
FREAKIN GREAT GAME, NOT BEING BAD BUT IF U DONT BUY THIS U ARE TRULY A STUPID DUMB PERSON!
If you cant wait until next week, April 29, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This looks an awesome game, and i was annoyed i hadnt pre-ordered earlier, however GAME online are in stock, but the catch is you have to buy it in a bundle with either: - Sixaxis or 360 controller, or Kane and Lynch, or Devil May Cry 4. But hey, if your needing a new game or controller its great, 59.99 i believe which if you need/want the other stuff its 20.00 saving. Cant wait!!!
Finally GTA has caught up to the times, but is it enough? April 29, 2008 18 out of 28 found this review helpful
Lets cut to the chase, this is the best GTA so far. The detail in the game is amazing. GTA's of old seemed obvious at times. They would build a city around the objectives of the games. Sometimes it was too obvious where your supposed to go, and also, when you wanna have some fun, there were random areas which seemd purposely built for you to jupm off with your car etc. This game has put 50% of its attention into building a realistic and believable city. The other 50% goes to a fantastic single player/ multiplayer campaigns.
I dont want to sound too harsh in this review, so i'll review it in comparrison to other GTA's. Its not a huge leap foreward for Rockstar. Credit to them for ensuring they maintain certain elements from the series, and implementing new elements such as multiplayer. But the game still feels dated. Its not as linear as the past few, but Rockstar have failed (in some areas) to deliver something new. They were the first to really push the Sandbox genre into a new level. They were also one of the first to start dealing with more mature content. I dont feel that they have added to this, and with this new iteration of GTA, it feels like a continuation of the old one, all beit with some addons and gloss.
Thats my moan over, as this game is still a must buy. I dont agree with it being the best game ever, and I think some profesisonal reviews have got too involved in the hype instead of seeing GTA for what it is.
Final comments? This is a fantastic game. Multiplayer is a blast and I look forward to seeing what additional content the developers will offer for this game. The storyline is amazing and continues its dealings with morality and mature content. The game engine, however, remains the same. Stable GTA sandbox. If you love it, you'll love this. If you dont, its just GTA all over. 9/10
