4 out of 5 stars Game for parties   May 25, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Great game, simple to play, hard to master. Hours of gameplay as you try to beat the computer in various races and time trials to unlock more characters/vehicles and spot shortcuts. Is interesting & all, but where the game shines is online against real people or in multiplayer mode at house parties.

You get a steering wheel add on in the box. This comes in handy for throwing at annyoing people walking in front of the TV while playing, but isnt much cop for driving with - use the nunchuck instead.

Is worth playing the timetrials in expert mode to learn the shortcuts & tactics before venturing online, otherwise you're going to spend a lot of time at the back.

Small gripe: its a tad unfair, and you often get zapped right at the finish line and end up 8th or 9th. That part is rather irritating. Everything else is excellent fun.

4 out of 5 stars for the long review people   May 22, 2008

to the long reviewers - Why do you write such long reviews?? I took one look at that and thought theres no way im gonna read all that(the guy who rated it 2stars). It's mario kart - you drive around and shoot things whilst playing as a bright and colourfull character, its not that complicated.

to people thinking of buying the game - I've not actually played this, but more than likely it'll be practically the same as the others, except with wii pad controlls, and better graphics, so dont except the world of it.Mario Kart games are really fun except sometimes short lived - but will prob be one of the funest games u own on wii.

Note - Mario kart is an awesome multiplayer, so would really recommend if thats what your looking for in a game

5 out of 5 stars Greatest game so far on Wii (perhaps until Smash Brawl comes along)   May 22, 2008

Since buying the Wii more than 1 year ago, Mario Kart is simply the most fun we have had playing so far! It's zany, crazy, racing action, and excellent to be able to race against opponents online...it gets very competitive and addictive so beware!

Indeed to unlock the cars, characters and courses you do need to spend some time completing the grand prix sections under single player, as well as racing online (certain unlockables are only available after beating a certain number of online opponents) and completing time trials. But hey, where's the fun in using cheat codes!!

I have been reading some comments on Amazon and must laugh - PLEASE DON'T SAY A GAME IS TERRIBLE SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU CANNOT WIN!!!! I have personally unlocked 95% of characters and cars, all courses on 50cc and 100cc, as well as beginning to unlock all courses on 150cc. Games aren't designed to be easy. It's about tactics, perhaps not trying to be in 1st place all through the race because then indeed - you WILL be had by a flying blue tortoise shell helmet!

Closing comment - if you do not own this game and are not afraid of doing your best to win and unlock, please buy Mario Kart and take up the challenge! Don't be put off by those lesser gamers who can't take a good beating just before the finish line.

5 out of 5 stars Best Mario Kart Game Ever   May 16, 2008
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

Mario Kart is by far the best game for the Wii in my opinion. The graphics are top-notch. Online play is superb and completely addictive. That's really the only thing I've been playing since I bought the game. I'm glad the game went back to its roots and forget a lot of the changes that the Double Dash made. There's 32 courses in the game, 16 new, 16 old. There really are some well-designed courses in the game. Koopa Cape is one of my favourites.

I have to say the Wii Wheel that comes packaged with Mario Kart is a waste of time. I used it on the first game I played and abandoned it after the first lap. I guess it's fun but you need to spend a lot of time in order to get used to it. I now use the Controller/Nunchuk option. It's far easier.

Online play is the big draw here and it's so much better than how the DS did it. You can have up to 12 players racing at the same time and you can pretty much find players straight away. You usually join existing races and can watch them until they've finished. Then you can race in the following race. The points system is good but is sometimes unfair at times. Sometimes you can get disconnected by the server losing hundreds of points and it takes ages to build your points back up even if you keep coming first place. Your ghost data in time trials is also uploaded to the servers and you can compare your times to other people's around the globe which is pretty interesting. You can race against other people's ghosts too.

A couple of complaints about the game. Blue Shells are more prevalent in this game than the DS game. Once, in one singleplayer match, I was hit five times. I can't tell you how many times I've been playing online only to be hit by a blue shell a few metres from finish line. I guess it makes it easier for players to catch up to first place but blue shells happen far too often. I'd prefer if they had reverted to how the N64 version managed them. Travelling along the road hitting everybody in its path. Another complaint is battle mode. It's basically team-based now and no free-for-all. I've only played battle mode once and didn't like it that much.

4 out of 5 stars Great fun, nice touch with the wheel!   May 16, 2008

As always this game's aimed at casual gamers as well!
For Starters the wheel is more of a novelty, great fun but you do so much better using the knunchuck and remote.
This one has twice the amount of tracks of the N64 version but somehow this game doesn't have the longevity... I'm finding after a fair few mass gameing sheshs we're finding that people aren't reaching for the MarioKart quite so much any more.

Overall great game and a must have!
