3 out of 5 stars Casio Exilim 1050   March 26, 2008

I've had a Casio 1050 for around 12 months. As a go anywhere compact 10mp camera it's smart and light and the best shot menu is useful.Images can be on the hard side and I'd rate it as quite good and o.k. for the price.
I also have a Panasonic Lumix with a stunning leica lens and although it's only 6.1 mp, it knocks the Casio out for quality and clarity, which goes to show that it's not all down to megapixels but lens quality.

4 out of 5 stars Cracking little camera.   March 18, 2008
My 4th digital camera and it gets the colours near to perfect.
Good sharp photos - no complaints.

Video on HQ settings is adequate but if you want good quality video then
buy a dedicated camcorder.

The device is smaller than I expected. If you've got big thick hands like
me then beware - the on/off button is too small, the SET button requires
fingernail action, the usb compartment is very very fiddely.

I'm gonna have to order a spare battery because the 2.5 hour recharge
isn't good enough.

Negatives asides it does a grand job with point and shoot and am glad I
bought it.

4 out of 5 stars great camera overall but pictures are flat   March 9, 2008
My old Sony 3.2 megapixel Cybershot finally conked out after years of extensive service, and this camera was a significant upgrade. It truly is excellent in many areas, including picture quality, battery life, and startup time -- all of this from a camera that (finally!) really does fit in a shirt pocket. I have also found the camera to be very sensitive; it is able to take good pictures with very little light.

There is one thing about the camera that is quite annoying, however, and that is that the pictures tend to be flat. Compared with the Sony I had, the colour isn't vivid, and the contrast isn't stark enough. As I have Adobe Photoshop, this isn't an insurmountable obstacle; I just edit my favourites. But I take a lot of photos, and more and more this is getting to be a real pain.

My Sony definitely had other problems, mainly with startup time and battery life -- but when I have to buy my next camera, I might go back to them just for this reason.

5 out of 5 stars Great camera!   March 8, 2008
Before buying this camera I looked through most of amazon, a digital camera magazine and anything else i could get hold of to find a compact digital camera that took good macro pictures and would be good for a complete novice for under 150. After about 5 hours of searching I found this camera and immediately wanted it. After looking at the reviews I ordered it and it came within 3 days (on free delivery!). I've had it for 2 days now and so far it's great. As other reviews have said it does have a slightly grainy screen but if you turn the quality onto fine its ok. With the 38 best shot modes a novice like me can take great looking pictures at the click of a button. The software provided makes it easy to put onto the computer and it also comes with a tv adapter which is great.

All in all this camera is great for novices and produces great pictures.

Get this camera! 5 stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars I wrote for a photographic trade association magazine....   February 8, 2008

I mean on a regular basis for some years, I also ran courses and lectured on B-Tec photographic moving image modules. To me, when I look at the pictures on large screen high resolution monitors - I see great pictures most of the time - HOWEVER, like many good cameras, especially if they're high-definition or for professional and broadcast work, there are quite a few adjustable variables on the Casio. And if you haven't downloaded the 150 page plus manual from the website, let me start by saying there are 38 easy select shooting modes including moving pictures with sound that it saves in AVI format.

There are 14 different menus for recording including manual & auto focus, timer, anti-shake etc.. 15 menus for quality, white balance, dynamic range, colour filter, sharpness, saturation & contrast. With screen sizes you can go from Poster at 3648x2736 pixcels, to 16:9 and down to vga that's 640x480. Of course the better the quality you select the more memory you use up with larger file sizes, so dodgy pictures might come from trying to get too many shots onto your memory card. I'd get 309 shots poster size in highest quality and 14,165 shots at 640x480 in economy mode, with 432 in 16:9 high res on my simple 2gb card. Surely there's something for everyone there?

Yes it is small, and although I haven't got one it does look as through it would fit in a Swan Vesta's matchbox. For me it's excellent, and has a better spec than some of the more expensive cameras - but at the end of the day there are an awful lot of things to do to get better pictures yourself - and if you can't hold a camera still, there is a tripod screw thread in the bottom, no I'm not saying get a tripod, but you could do what a neighbour did to use his camera in his garden, he got an adaptor, screwed that in, and rests the bottom of the adaptor on a garden cane!

Oh and for the person that couldn't find the zoom button it's the small lever that goes left or right just in front of the shutter button.

Get snapping!
