5 out of 5 stars Brilliant 500 GB hard drive for 50   September 27, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I received my Western Digital Elements 500GB on the 29 of August 2008 and it just works great with my Mac, I use it to back up my entire computer using the Time Machine.
I've had no problems at all using it and I did read other people reviews before I purchased mine but I don't think I spotted any reviews using a Mac.
So if you have a Mac this is the perfect partner for you to back you computer using Time Machine, not sure about a PC because I do not have one.

3 out of 5 stars Reliable Old Plodder   September 14, 2008

I bought this drive more than 12 months ago and it's proved a good, reliable plodder, hence three stars. But since then, Amazon have been offering other drives for less money and with no fan, which means they're quiet, and there's no annoying delay while they spin up.

1 out of 5 stars For backup spend {{{{{{A Few Dollars More}}}}}!!!!   September 7, 2008

I would not recommend this drive to anyone whether for simple portable data and certainly not for backup. Anyone considering this drive should read reviews here as well as other threads. I know, we never do first do we!

I got this drive to backup a few Gb of data whilst reformatting my main drive in my PC, mostly beloved music files I have spent a few years collecting and many years of worked related and reference files.

Plugged in and off I went, sorted out a good directory structure then moved the files. Great now I have my files backed up and at last, have them in some sort or order - spent a lot of time doing this and was a bit like spending all day tidying the garage or worse, the loft.. now that was a day well spent and you feel like you have done some good!

Before formatting my old drive I had a last check and browsed the files on the WD Elements External drive - all in order and looking good.

The next day when I had completed the rebuild of my old PC and plugged the WD drive in... browsed the files.. shock horror!!! the directories were now under the wrong folders and showing empty but the properties of the drive indicated about 200Gb of storage used - which is about right for what I had on there.

Looking at user experience with WD support im not going to bother and I don't want another drive from them anyway. also im not going to take it back to PC World as hopefully one day I might be able to get the data back.

So if you are thinking about buying one of these, think again. in fact, you should go and tidy your garage up and the loft - you will do some good and get brownie points from her indoors as well - which you wont get for being a nerd with your PC for a few days with the only result being losing your entire digital collection- yes I've done it again, not had proper backups in place. If you don't need your archives to be portable, just get a good hard disk and backup to that instead - or if you have time, backup and catalogue on DVD or to somewhere in hyperspace.

I had to give it one star as it seems I cannot leave zero stars!

3 out of 5 stars ups and downs   September 3, 2008

I bought a 250 Gig version about a year ago and it was fine until last week when I started getting I/O errors, I have one of this model too, which is trouble-free, but I use the 250 Gig every day, and the 500 Gig as a backup, so although they are very good value for money it might be worth checking the opposition as well before buying.

1 out of 5 stars Originally great...then random failure!!   August 19, 2008

I bought this product just under a year ago, and had a similar problem to the review below. It was working fine, doing what it was meant to, but then it just stopped working one day. It was not being recognised by any computers, Vista or XP. It would not let me reformat it.
I'm actually so angry because I thought this would be the safest way to back up files and put my music on to save space on my computer, but now I've lost over 60GB of music!
