Ipod Classic 80GB Amazing!! October 11, 2007 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I just got my ipod a few days ago and its great the sound quality is very good compared to my old ipod i think, videos look amazing on it so do the games you can buy for it, overall i give it 5 stars as i have not had any problems with it yet and i have had it for about 3 days just make sure you update your ipod with the latest software. Battery life is very good aswell. If your going to buy the nano dont as its tiny and for an extra 30-40 you can get so much more space (use it as a backup for stuff on your pc).
Do Not Buy Until Bugs Are Fixed October 10, 2007 46 out of 56 found this review helpful
I got my iPod Classic 80gb the other day and immediately noticed how slow it was synching music from iTunes. I thought it was just because it was quite a big job to transfer over 50gb of material and thought nothing of it. The next day though, I tried to add a few songs, update my podcasts and create a playlist and realized that there was a real problem: iTunes kept on freezing and the process was so slow that a procedure which took about a minute on my old 2nd gen model now took fifteen! Fearing I'd just gotten a shoddy model, I did a quick online search and discovered that hundreds and hundreds of iPod Classic owners are experiencing the same problem. On the Apple Support site alone there are multiple threads asking for help. This is not a problem with my particular device, it is seemingly a universal problem with the Classic, which people are experiencing even after getting replacement units, restoring and reformatting, and using different computers: there is a functionality and compatability problem between the iPod Classic and iTunes. This is frustrating, and makes adding or updating music to the iPod a great long chore. So far, Apple have not acknowleged this problem, and have offered no solutions. Until they do, and they hopefully release an update to fix the issue, I recommend that you DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! They have lost a lot of substance for superficial style, and it seems clear to a lot of disgruntled Classic owners that this machine was released into the world without being properly tested. Apple have really let themselves down!
The Good and The Bad all in one... October 5, 2007 13 out of 20 found this review helpful
This was bought to replace my Creative zen jukebox which was superb but I lost the mains cable and given that mp3 player is a little large for you pocket I felt an update was due. I wanted to go for Creative again as the sound was superb as was functionality but I went with Ipod because I have a mac and it was important that compatibility was good. The ipod worked for half a day and then decided it no longer wanted to come on. I think it was due to album artwork but can't be sure. Either way it's being sent back and I won't buy another until these issues are remedied. I think I'll go for a Creative Zen when they're in stock and I'll chance the compatibility. The sound of the ipod was fine, I used some old Creative headphones as the apple ones that arrive with the ipod are honestly too treble heavy and this sorted the output. It did all that I wanted it to and was easy to use until it broke.
Good features hampered by thin and bright sound October 2, 2007 23 out of 27 found this review helpful
This is my third iPod and in terms of features - nice screen, good storage capacity, nice extras, build quality - it has improved. But what has happened to the sound? Previous generation iPods had warm sound with good detail and a good sense of 'space'. This new iPod seems to add some graininess and brightness to the music - so eventually it can sound fatiguing/tiring. Bass seems a little distorted too. Ok. So perhaps I should change the headphones... Well, via the supplied earbuds, to Etymotics, to Sennheisers, the distortion is still there. I do not have a faulty iPod. Check out the online reviews and the discussions on various iPod related forums where there is plenty of negative feedback regarding the poor, distorted, sound quality.
In fact, Apple have changed the chip which provides the sound processing. It is believed this is the reason why the new iPod Classic's 'sound signature' has changed. Can this be fixed with a firmware update? Because, right now, inspite of the new features and seemingly improved build, the iPod Classic doesn't sound 'right'.
Slick design but poor sound ultimately unsatisfying September 28, 2007 19 out of 29 found this review helpful
I used to be very sceptical about MP3 music as I found it mostly sounded pretty dire on most players I heard. Then I discovered the Archos range of tiny 20GB MP3 players. I now have an ARCHOS 204 20GB which sounds amazingly good for an MP3 player. However my music collection is approx 65GB and it was becoming a pain transfering difference albums on/off the player. About 2 weeks ago my daughters boyfriend showed me his new 80GB IPOD classic and I have to say it looked and felt great. I was in a fairly noisy location so didnt pay that much attention to the sound and decided thatI reaaly needed the extra capacity and for 159 I would venture into IPOD world. I've had the player for several days and although it looks and feels great I just do not like the sound. It is very poor in my opinion, especially for such a mature product. Strangely it sounds worse on higher bit-rate tracks and as my music is mostly 320bps it is a problem. I cannot really explain the sound issue except that it is rather thin, cold and compressed sounding especially on complex music and especially piano or plucked strings (Guitar or violin). There is little or no sustain on notes. If I could return it I would, but I'll probably use it as a jukebox for attaching to my hi-fir or car, rather than personal listening. My advice would be go to an apple shop or borrow one and listen to a good range of music before buying. Also if you really dont need the capacity get the ARCHOS 204. It sounds MUCH better and is cheaper and smaller, albeit a little thicker.
