Navman S30 3D Satellite Navigation Unit With UK & Ireland Mapping
This was my first sat nav and I am pleased with it. It was fairly easy to get up and running and guided me through an unknown route very well. I had a bit of trouble with putting in adresses as it repeated it back OK but then didn't recognise it! The voice instructions are easy to hear and I like the fact that it repeats it. The downsides are firstly that there is NO instruction book in the box! I found this extremely irritating as I had to access instructions on the internet and would have prefered to have looked at a written manual. This was made more annoying by the provision of a very fat book with legal information in all languages that I do NOT need to have to hand so that could have been accessed through the internet instead and the space in the box taken up with a more useful user guide. The only other downside was that the unit kept falling off my windscreen and caused distraction to my driving as well as the threat of breaking the unit. But all in all a good buy; and it does it's job.
technically wonderful, mapping inaccurate August 8, 2008 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is my first car satnav system and I was impressed with the ease of use, the fact that you could put it in a pocket and listen to the directions without any hassle of having to have it glued to a window. It would have been nice to have been able to put in lat and long and have them read out on the screen, surely this would have been simple to add on.
The only real issue is that the maps are at least three years out of date (in 2008 the Oakham bypass doesn't exist on the satnav although it has been there for at least two years and planned two years before that) and some junctions are wholly inaccurate. You wouldn't expect to buy a map in 2008 with a 2004 road system shown and you wouldn't expect that from a satnav either. It would have been excusable if a free upgrade voucher were given with the Amazon purchase, however, there was no mention of that when I bought it. Because of the out of date mapping I would rate it as being almost useless and potentially timewasting and unreliable.
Terrible if you live in Ireland July 30, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Wow, what a great product if it only worked !
Easy set up and display but the maps must be older than me and I'm 35 ! Likes to take you for winding routes up side roads all the time. Have used it four times and EACH time got the route wrong. It's a poor joke when on one journey it showed me driving through fields FIVE times. Great product if you already know where your going.
Maps out of date July 15, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've had the S30 for a couple of weeks and it is excellent for the price. Mostly takes me exactly to my chosen destination which I've found extremely useful when travelling on unlit and unmarked country lanes. The only down side I've found was when in the centre of Reading, Berkshire when it tried to send me down one-way streets on two occasions. Then it computes the route again and gets totally confused, repeatedly telling me to 'perform a u-turn when possible!' Other than that I don't regret the purchase but next time would look for a model that allowed the mapping to be updated which the S30 does not, apart from buying whole new maps which are expensive.
Navman S30 Sat Nav July 3, 2008 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this following reading a good review in the Sunday Times. This was a mistake and returned it to Amazon who refunded promptly. Have since bought a Gamin Nuvi 200W from them. Totally satisfied.
The Navman couldn't identify my address or Post Code even though the house was built in 1969.
With the small screen keying in an address was fiddly even though I haven't got huge hands or fingers.
On the road the mapping was less than adequate taking me on some strange routes and it even wanted me to make a U turn in a one way street. Other roads that have been around for many years were also missing from its mapping.
Voice directions were generally quite good though the on screen map lagged behind far too much which I imagine would prove confusing in unfamiliar territory.
Not recommended even for the novice Sat Nav user as there are far superior products out there for very little more money.
