Overall very good (but nothing's perfect) September 17, 2008 I've had my Zen (16GB) for a week now and thought I'd share my take on it. I'm only using mine for music, so I can't comment on its capabilities for video.
The usability is great - in general it does everything you want it to, the controls are intuitive, and you can do a small amount of customisation of the menu etc. You can play any item (artist, album, track) immediately, or add it to the "Selected music", which is like a temporary playlist. In fact, you create playlists by saving your selected music.
The sound quality's excellent, which is important. Initially I dismissed the earphones because they look and feel relatively cheap. However, just last night I decided to do a comparison, and found that they were noticeably better than all of: 1) The earphones that came with my previous mp3 player, made by iRiver. 2) A headphone/microphone headset I had lying around, made by Logitech. 3) My pair of Sony in-ear phones that I paid about 35 for. So now I'm sticking with the Creative earphones.
Unfortunately it doesn't ignore "The", "A" etc. when sorting items alphabetically, so I ended up re-tagging a lot of my mp3s to remove "The" from the start of the artist name. While I'm on the subject, the software that comes with the player only allows you to edit ID3 tags for one file at a time, which is somewhat unhelpful. Windows Media Player let me edit them in bulk, and in fact I ended up using that to synch my Zen, rather than its own software. You can also dump music on it as a generic storage device, but when I did that it didn't quite pick up all the ID3 data properly. I'm not very impressed with the software - it seems to be a compromise between a file explorer and a media player, but without the full benefits of either. I'll be using Windows Media Player for mine in future.
I found it could also get into a muddle occasionally when you delete things from it (either via the player's own interface or via software when it's docked): you delete something and it initially tells you that it's deleted, but when you go back to the menu it's appeared again. I'd guess that its internal index is out of synch with what files are actually there. After a lot of frustration I found that the only way to fix it was to use its recovery mode's Clean Up option, which re-builds the index. Unfortunately this also resets your firmware settings (menu customisation etc.)
Another bug I found is that if you have 2 albums with the same name (e.g. "The Best Of"), it will tend to use only one of the album artworks for both of them.
But when you've got past the niggles it's really enjoyable to use. The display is nice and clear, and looks slick. In lists of items it can show 7 on the screen at once (or 6 albums in artwork view), and it's quick to navigate around with an A-Z bar at the side (although this isn't available in album artwork view, despite there being space for it).
Anyway, I'm still very glad I bought it, despite the few small problems.
WOW September 16, 2008 I bought this player as an update to my creative zen 20gb photo as it was a bit too heavy for my liking and after buying this 16gb player I can give it nothing but praise.
The sound quality is very good but the radio could have been better (difficult to get a decent signal).
The most impressive thing is the picture quality, I mean WOW. It is truly amazing.
What happened to the software? September 8, 2008 Creative ZEN 16GB MP3 Player
I have loved Creative MP3 players since they came out, this is my third one over the years. All bought for different uses not as replacements, and so far this one is the best. The music quality is as good as usual, the pictures and videos are amazing to watch for such a small piece of technology. In fact yet again i can't fault the MP3 player. However when it comes to the software, it seems like they are spending less time on it and giving you a basic and complicated replacement. With the original player i bought, as part of the software you got the creative jukebox. Which was easy to use when adding and sorting your music, easy to search through and to edit all the information you could possibly want to edit. Now i even have difficulty adding music to it from a cd, it seems they are more interested in getting you to spend more money and download stuff!
worth it...not for the radio though.. August 25, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
this is a really good little player, worth the money.it does look very sleek and holds alot of media on it and up to another 4 gb can be added on memory card. only problems i found were that (and maybe it could also be my computer!) that converting long video clips made my computer overheat a few times as it took quite a long time and the radio to be honest does seem a bit rubbish...but then i did not buy it for that. can only really get one local programme on it. also sometimes i did notice that it seems to split up tracks/artists in a slightly confusing way when you put big compilations on it...but again maybe thats me. apart from that its a pretty good bit of kit :)

i own a Creative ZEN 16Gb and i think that its a great item its easy to use, has great sound and the screen is good quality for what it can do one thing i think they could change is putting lights on the button so you can see them plus having more formates for video's but other than that its a great item.
