What it should be July 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Got this product few days ago, and so far, it has performed just as it should have (minus the fact that it wasn't recognized the first time I plugged it in, but it might have been windoz acting up). Used it mainly under Ubuntu, and it has performed beautifully so far; crossing my fingers, it will not die any time soon. Oh another thing, first thing I did I deleted all the files the HD had inside, did not even bother with the software.
HELP!!!! July 15, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently bought the WD 500GB external hard drive to store all my music and video files from itunes, im a little confused on how to send files to it and how to view what is already on the hard drive can anybody put me straight?
Strong internally but not externally, and very bulky July 12, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Ok well i'm quite a clumsy guy so I drop stuff a lot. Now while this harddrive survives the drops and continues to work, the plastic it's made of it very "snap happy" Basically every time I drop it another bit of plastic snaps off, Im not gonna have much of the outside of it left soon!
However it still works, it's surviving my clumsyness quite well.
Cons: Very bulky (not too portable). Poor external material.
Pro's: Can take a decent amount of abuse without loss of function. :)
Hope it helps!
Sleek quiet and stylish July 12, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have read a number of articles lately stating the importance of backing up valuable date on a PC. This got me looking to purchase an external hard drive. Actually I already have two, but one is well, almost dead. So I wanted something that would not only hold the data of my partitioned drive in my pc, but the external one that has my music collection on it. I read many reviews, and looked at a number of sites. They all seemed to rate this Western Digital My Book Essential 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive as very good. So, knowing that Amazon are a reliable and reputable retailer, I went ahead and bought one. Wow!! what a nice neat little thing it is. Now sitting on the corner of my desk and it looks fab. It is quiet and unobtrusive. Any it now has all the data from my pc and the other external drive on it. This is a fine little drive and I urge anyone to find better.
Excellent. Quiet, compact and reliable. Plus - a tip for Mac users. July 10, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the third My Book drive I have bought. I have been very pleased with all of them, and am still using the (smaller capacity) one that I bought 3 years ago!
Reasons to recommend this drive: - Quiet The external power supply and well-ventilated design means that this drive can stay cool without a fan. - Reliable I have never had a problem with any of the 3 My Books that I have bought over the past 3 years. - Small The drives take up very little space on a bookshelf, and the external power supply is tiny. - Stylish I'd much rather have this thing on my desk than a bulky horizontal case. If you're going to use a drive every day, might as well have it look good!
Essential tip for Mac users:
- THIS DRIVE IS PARTITIONED FOR WINDOWS. Please excuse the capitals, but this is important and it isn't in the manual. If you want to use this disk with a Mac, the first thing you should do is repartition it.
Go to Disk Utility, click on the My Book disk, and select the "partition" tab. Create at least one partition (don't just leave it at "current"). Then click "options" and select "GUID partition table" if you have an Intel Mac, or "Apple Partition table" if you have a PPC mac. Finally, click "Apply". Then reformat the drive in HSF Extended + Journaling format.
Why bother doing this? The default MS-DOS parititioning will work, but it will be slower and you are more likely to run into errors. I honestly believe that failure to repartition the drive is the main reason that people have reported problems with using this drive on a Mac.
