Thunderbird 99 as the lawn-mower is now known... April 28, 2008 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Cutting the grass, for me, has always been a job a bit like polishing the dog. It's nice to see a dog with a shiny nose but I do have better things to do with my time. My Model-T Qualcast Petrol 35S moved with us into a house with grass that was half bowling green and half relief map of the dog's cellulite-thighs. Model-T proved able to cope with the latter about as well as I cope with the weeding (it fainted on the spot as soon as I showed it the task). Enter the Rotak 40 on the strength of other people's reviews here. This machine not only cuts the lumpy bits, it even cuts a very nice dash on the styling front: you won't feel at all silly watching the Missus washing and vacuuming out this wee beastie on the driveway on a Sunday morning before she does the cars and cooks lunch. It starts no matter whether you've visited it or not in the shed over Winter and it handles the first cut of the season (no mean feat in my garden) with ease. Once it has tamed the Winter growth it is just as competent at delicately trimming the bowling-green bits too. The Rotak 40 was born to be a lawnmower. Thoroughly recommended. Even by the Missus and the dawg.
Forget Flymo! March 22, 2008 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
My first review and who would have thought it would be to sing the praises of a lawnmower?! However, this model is absoloutly superb. Previously owned a second-hand Flymo, purchased 15 years ago, that just kept going and going until it gracefully 'died' last Summer. Would have gone for another one but my parents' experience made me think twice. Their new Flymo went in for repair 3 times in the first 6 months and finally went up in a spectacular plume of blue smoke! Thought about a petrol mower but I live 200 yards from a clifftop on the Isle of Wight, overlooking the English Channel, so the weather can be pretty wild at times (those 'gale force' arrows from the South-West are pointing at us!) so the thought of pleading with a lawnmower to start in damp weather knocked that idea on the head! After reading all the positive reviews for the Bosch Rotak 40 I decided to take a chance on it and have not been disappointed. All the glowing reports are correct. Even at the tail-end of the Autumn it cut through damp grass quickly and efficiently and collected all the cuttings without leaving clumps behind (I've dreamt of having a grass-box for years - sad!). It also improved the quality and look of my lawn that is certainly not a bowling-green. Each Spring I have dreaded the 'first-cut' - hours of hacking away and thinking a machete would be better, but not so this year - the Rotak 40 has glided across the grass giving a superb cut without all the scuff-marks and scalping that usually happens at this time. My one problem with this mower, if any, is that up until now I "Don't do stripes" and looking at my efforts so far I certainly wouldn't win the local ploughing competition! However, that is a glitch with me, not the lawnmower - and I am improving! On the whole, an excellent piece of kit that you certainly would not be disappointed with!
Better than the Flymo !! November 28, 2007 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I bought this after my Flymo packed up and glad I have made the switch to Rotak.
The advantages over the Flymo are: 1. Much better at collecting the grass (No more clumps left on the lawn) 2. Cuts right up to the edge (My strimmer is almost redundant now) 3. Cutting time is quicker 4. Does not blow the cut grass all over the patio which then needs sweeping up !. 5. Very easy to change the cutting depth. You have to get a 'spanner' out to change it on the Flymo. However, I can't see myself using anything but the lowest setting because the other settings seems too high ?.
Disadvantage over the Flymo are : 1. More expensive 2. Not as compact. The handle does not fold flat hence can not hang on the wall. 3. Not as maneuverable if you have a postage stamp size garden. I have a medium size so great for me
The mower I have been looking for for years!!! November 4, 2007 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
This mower is brilliant. I have been using a Flymo and a Suffolk Punch, the latter cost me over 400 and this mower works better for me. its high powered, easy to operate and has never let me down in 6 months of constant use. I use it for 5 gardens and do each at least once a week. Long or short grass, its no problem for this mower. The box is large and easy to empty, may it would be letter with a see through panel to see if its full, but overall I can't complain since the mower is by far the best I have used in 30 years. Highly recommended!!
rotak 40 August 26, 2007 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
Based on the reviews of other people on the site we purchased a Bosch Rotak 40. Couldnt wait for it to arrive ,as soon as it did it was out of the box and on the lawn. As soon as it was switched on WOW was it quiet compared to the ear splitting sound of the terrible Flymo we had previously which couldnt mow or collect grass. The garden took only 10 minute to mow compared to an hour and a half previously because of the constant unblocking and cleaning out with the Flymo. One sweep with the Rotak and the garden is completed and only one grassbox full. I am ecstatically happy with the Rotak. I only wish I had found this product years ago. My neighbour is extremely jealous and is in the process of now purchasing a Rotak.
