Great with dust but not so great with hair March 26, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Somewhat surprisingly, I was thrilled to bits to get a Dyson for Christmas as I'd owned one previously and it had worked very well. Not very romantic, I know, but it it was just what I wanted. I was therefore rather disappointed to find that it doesn't pick up hairs very well.
When the marketing material sang the praises of the flat head, I was under the impression that this was an accessory, not the main all purpose head. The problem with this head is that it doesn't have a roller to pick up the hairs, so it pushes them around the carpet until you bend down to pick them up or have about five goes over them before they are sucked up. Dyson get round this by offering to sell you the turbine head, which is an extra 40, and whilst I will probably buy one, I think it's a bit much to have to buy an extra attachment so that the machine performs a very basic function. Maybe I'm just using it wrong, but in order to find out I will have to buy the user guide for 2.50! The strange thing about it is that the suction is fantastic and almost pulls the carpet off the floor, so it's great with dust and bits but somehow manages not to pick up the hairs. Just to clarify, our household has two people with shortish/shoulder length hair, one with long hair and a short haired cat, and it's the human hairs that are the problem, not the pet hairs.
I also agree with the reviewer who said that the handle can get in the way, which is also the case with the thingy that attaches the wand to the vacuum cleaner. It would be useful to be able to detach them as they can be a bit unwieldy when you want to get into nooks and crannies, and also when vacuuming stairs.
Sorry to be negative - Dysons are great machines, but this one isn't as good as the last one I had (DC08), which unfortunately broke down after about 7 years of use.
Brilliant! March 24, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This vacuum is simply brilliant. It's light, maneuverable, fairly quiet and near enough sucks the nails out of the floorboards! We've had no problems on wooden floors or short/medium length carpet - it sucks up absolutely everything, including the usually stubborn sock fluff.
My girlfriend finds it small/light enough for her to do the stairs, and I find it study enough to bash into the odd wall. The head easily fits under beds and into the little grooves under the fridge/washing machine. The cable is also long enough so we can do the whole of our 3-bed semi from 2 plug sockets - 1 upstairs, 1 down.
I actually quite enjoy cleaning day now we have this to play with, and would highly recommend it.
A word to the wise though - you can get it MUCH cheaper from a number of High Street shops.
Excellent powerful handy hoover! February 10, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I already own a Dyson upright but having 3 kittens I needed a hoover which I could quickly get out to hoover up litter from their trays and also needed an attachment to get under the bed and in small places.
Again, Dyson have come up trumps and I am very impressed with the DC19 - it's great for the car as it won't fall over or run away as an upright can - the great thing for me is the quick cord release and return means I don't have to faff with winding the cord up after each use. It is quite noisy, but as usual the bin release and empty function is flawless.
Overall even if you have an upright already the cylnider is still very handy - also seems to have dropped by 100 recently which makes it an excellent buy.
Almost flawless February 1, 2008 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
Dysons are extraordinary vacuum cleaners. They can make the most slovenly person suddenly house-proud, and once you've owned one you'll never want to go back to an old-style 'hoover'. The performance, ergonomics and styling are a delight. With the right tool attached (or wrong tool, depending on your intentions) the DC19 can be powerful enough to pull your rugs into the air, extract splinters from the floorboards and remove varnished-over dirt and sawdust from between them. No exaggeration. It's little wonder that the term 'sucks like a Dyson' has entered the popular lexicon in various contexts.
And over the years almost all the minor flaws have been ironed out, so that the current Dysons are... well, almost flawless. Compared with the original DC02 cylinder model, the DC19's construction looks and feels sturdier, the bin is now a little easier to detach and empty, the on-board tool storage is better than having the things waving around on the end of the handle, and it's no longer so easy to confuse the on-off button with the cord rewind. It's also better to have the gale of expelled air blown upwards rather than downwards.
The only faults anyone could find are likely to be matters of minority personal preference (unless there's a rare manufacturing slip-up). Personally, for example, I don't get on with the DC19's trigger-grip handle and find myself holding the barrel a lot of the time.
The prime exception to the machine's perfection is its problem with fine powders. Flour and plaster dust are two examples of particles that will clog the filter faster than you can fill the Clear Bin(tm). This issue is covered in the fine print of the instruction booklet but I consider it serious enough to warrant an asterisk alongside the claim that "others clog, ours don't". If you're a messy pastry cook, an over-enthusiastic home improver or a wasteful drug dealer, you'd be better off with a dustpan and brush. Aside from that, the DC19 is truly a miracle of modern engineering.
I just want things to work properly January 29, 2008 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
This vacuum cleaner stops working altogether ... Probably something to do with an over active safety cutout, because when you gently tug at the cord (which incidentally is nowhere near its end stop) you can sometimes get it to suck again. And yes it has been to the Dyson repair people. This is very annoying!
