5 out of 5 stars Loved this!   September 16, 2008
I'm a huge Marian Keyes fan and agree that this is a departure from her usual frothy style. But I loved the gritty subject matter and her refusal to shy away from tough issues. Let's face it, her previous books have also dealt with death, adultery and violence so this shouldn't be such a shock to the diehard froth fans. It's great to see a writer take a risk and extend her style instead of rehashing the same stuff (are you listening, Maeve Binchy?!). Really enjoyed this.

2 out of 5 stars Not just me then?   September 15, 2008

I was sooooo excited when I found the latest of Marian Keyes books was out. Unfortunately, I am really, really disappointed with the book. I find it really hard work, but maybe that is just with the effort of having to read the incredibly annoying 'Lola' chapters. In fact, that was the reason I logged on to Amazon to read the reviews - I just wanted to know that it isn't only me who finds the Lola style of writing so annoying and think that this book is not a patch on the rest of her novels. I'm at page 266, wondering whether to continue or not.........
Marian's earlier books are some of the best I've ever read again and again - gutted that this one won't be held in the same regard!

2 out of 5 stars I am usually a Marian Keyes fan, but very disappointed...   September 14, 2008
I found this book incredibly difficult to read - the individual stories within the book are just too fragmented, I kept losing track of who was who and I generally just found it boring! Like some other users - I found Lola's style of writing so irritating I resorted to skim-reading. Pick any of her other books...just don't waste your money on this one!

1 out of 5 stars Very poor   September 12, 2008
I was so disappointed with this book - I loved Watermelon, Rachel's Holiday, Angels and Anybody Out There. It is just the stand alone books that seem to disappoint me. I really cannot think of anything at all which I liked - I am only thankful I bought it from a used book store. Sorry but I had expected a lot more.

3 out of 5 stars Not the worst but not the best   September 11, 2008
As soon as I saw this book in Waterstones I got all excited. I hadn't realised Marian had released a new book. I'm a huge fan of Marian Keyes, I have all her books and love most of them.
This book is a bit more serious than her other books dealing with domestic violence and such.
I thought it was an enjoyable read and I loved how each person had their own style of writing. It made connecting with the character a lot more easier.
By all means read this book but dont expect to be caught up in it like 'The Other Side of the Story' or 'Sushi for Beginners'
