Greatest modern music album EVER! August 24, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
'The Soft Bulletin' is a rare beast. From the sunny-pop opener 'Race for the Prize' through the dramatic 'Spoonful Weighs a Ton' and 'Feeling Yourself Disintergrate', a truly heart-wrenching, beautiful song about fearing death (let's not forget 'Waitin' for a Superman', the album's pivotal moment), it's an astonishing record that may not change the world, but its' use of different sounds and textures plus its' confident production proves that it is a truly groundbreaking and intriguing experience. There's not really a duff track, though 'Slow Motion' and 'Suddenly Everything Has Changed' are a bit weak compared to the rest of the album. Whilst they've surprised us with even bigger and brighter things, 'The Soft Bulletin' will forever remain Wayne and co's most daring and interesting effort to date.
COSMIC GENIUS! August 21, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
What a great Kaliedoscope of sound this is! We expect this from these guys anyway but for me, this record really goes above and beyond the call of duty. With the Flaming Lips, I actually begin by more or less disliking each record; they are not the most instant of bands (unless you happen to be seeing them live in which case you will already be converted!) but persistence really pays of and, much like their friends Mercury Rev, they make albums with great longevity. This is an album you can make friends with! If you are interested in listening to something a little further out into space than traditional guitar/bass/drums then give these guys a go: the quality of ideas here is most impressive. However, it is the bravery of emotion that will zero in on your heart and take it over. What a great album, what a GREAT band.
THE best!! May 31, 2006 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
this is the best album ever created. simply. whether i'm listening to it for kicks or in awe, it ALWAYS hits the spot. the only (or first) album that has sounds which cross classifiable borders and EVERY second of it is a labour of love. it never ceases to amaze. the lips best moment so far.
Something missing April 19, 2006 2 out of 9 found this review helpful
I can't shake the feeling that this album is somewhat contrived, self-conscious & mildly pretentious. There are twists & turns apparent for their own sake & experiments with unusual sounds. The problem for me is that the record doesn't coalesce into a unified whole to form something which inspires wonder and devotion. It lacks heart.
Nonetheless, it's entertaining enough & worth a listen. Don't expect a masterpiece, though.

I give this 2 stars because it is not inept. But I was expecting creativity, passion, excitement, experimentalism... what I got was some bland, insipid pop stylings that sound like Yes on a bad day (although there is no such thing as Yes on a good day as far as I am concerned)
