1 out of 5 stars The Empress' New Clothes # 137   June 14, 2008

Who buys this bland, gimmicky & totally set-up rubbish? Wow, how original -Madonna's learnt that trying (really trying)to be sexy and swearing loads (how naughty!) sells albums. She shows even less musical originality in that she keeps choosing producer of the month to make her forgettable anodyne muzak. Get off the stage woman and let someone with some real musical talent and something useful to say to sell some tunes! Rip offs all round!

Embaressment! That's how I felt as I popped this latest media hyped cd into my jukebox at a recent house party. Some of the lyrics are soo cringe worthy you want to leave the room whilst she blurts the most dire lyrics she's ever wrote!

However, I will give it 2 stars as when I'm on my own I love Incredible and Dance 2Night :-)

It's been well documented that this was Madonna's last album for Warner before her new flashy live-download-multimedia record deal and that the Confessions album didn't set the US market alight like it did elsewhere.

So businesswoman Madonna (and all her advisors) decide to produce a quick release using all the top R'n'B producers with an album worth of tracks and enough material to do a whistle stop tour before the end of the year.

Good business sense and it makes perfect sense from Madge's point of view.

Musically? The album is poor in my opinion. And I've loved and stood by almost all the albums she's produced in the last 20 years. Except for Bedtime Stories, which was saved by the Bjork track and a few other side balls.

I didn't find Hard Candy had many catchy tunes (except for Miles Away and maybe Heartbeat). And she seems to have produced some incredibly horrendous bridges (see Give it to me, Heartbeat and a few other songs). I'm quite surprised to now say in hindsight that 4 minutes probably is actually a good song compared to some of the other stuff on here.

First album by her which doesn't appear to be hers and there is little personality behind it. A shame.

Hopefully, she'll make something better next year...

2 out of 5 stars Easy on the Candy...   June 5, 2008

Originally, before the album came out I had heard only a few songs from it. I still got a good idea of 'Hard Candy' and decided to write a review on it. Now have heard the whole album I stand by my below review:

Madonna needs to come up with a record far more original than 'Hard Candy'. Why should Madonna copy what is already out there? Especially when this 'Timberland' hip hop can sound TOO raw, and emotionally shallow. No more songs about booties please! The track The Beat Goes On and 4 Mins do not compare with catchy, Original Madonna classics such as Like A Virgin, Dress You Up, Papa Don't Preach, Ray Of Light, even Hung Up which used the ABBA sample. Miles away seems unfinished to me though I may have heard an early version. But where is the real emotion heard on Like A Prayer? If Madonna wants to do a fun, urban record why not something with more soul? That, I would treasure as a fan.

From hearing the whole album, the other problem that it is listenable but it almost seems like a collection of B sides with the odd decent track thrown in. She's Not Me has a groovy 80s beat to it, with a mysterious 80s intro and the lyrics are fairly amusing. However, towards the end it speeds up into a dance track, thereby making it sound like an extended remix. Give It To Me is also decent with a good beat, synths and a good attitude but then its spoilt with the breakdown in the middle and one of her guest vocals making a sneaky appearence. In fact, the ego of Timberland is demostrated on this Madonna album as he doesn't seem content with simply producing it, each person she collabourates with has to make a brief vocal appearence on her song. Very irrtiating since it is supposted to be a solo album. Incredible has a too harsh and tinny beat and is spoilt with Madonna squealing the word incredable at the end with of course a odd brief vocal appearence from Pharrell. It strikes me that Madonna does need to grow up now and do something with more ballads and soul. Music is not just for dancing.

3 out of 5 stars Hmmmm......   June 2, 2008

Hmmmm.... I guess you could say I'm an old duffer, but remember, I was only 18 when her first album came out ( I loved it!!!). This album in isolation is good. But Madge is trying WAY too hard to be young. She's not. Teaming up with Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Kanye West seems desperate. She should just mature with her music... not always try to be 20! She may have a mega bod.... but on the cover she looks like a hard faced slapper in boots!!
Good album.... just not Madonna.
