4 out of 5 stars A couple of minor irritations but otherwise great software   September 6, 2006

I was a bit concerned after reading some of the negative reviews here, but decided to risk installing this software anyway. And I'm glad I did.

Yes, there is some truth in some of the reviews
- downloading the updates to bring everything up to date initially is a bit tedious as it does each section at a time and most require a restart - norton is better designed in this respect
- antispam is not as good as norton's in the handling of spam messages - more options to be configurable would be a huge boon. It's efficacy at picking out spam is not a problem, however...

hence the 4 star rating...

However, the positives are many. My computer now boots over 2 minutes faster than it did when using Norton/Symantec and there is no noticeable deterioration in performance.
The full system scan is faster than Norton.
The software is easy to use, the on-disk manual sufficiently detailed to be of use to experienced users but simple enough for novices to understand and follow. Configuration of the options of the various packages within the suite is far more intuitive, even if there is room for more options to be configurable.
It appears to somehow pick up some options from my old Norton, which I had uninstalled before installing McAfee - unless defaults for, for example, scheduled scans just happened to be when mine were set to... a little spooky! And importing lists of friends from various email account types and packages such as Outlook is a doddle. It identifies email accounts automatically and correctly and the links to places to test your firewall and virus scanner are useful.

In summary - easy to use, intuitive, doesn't need much configuration from the defaults and decent value for money.
Beats Symantec/Norton hands down in my book.

5 out of 5 stars Just change the settings   August 23, 2006

I purchased this product after using norton (which grinds my pc to a hault)- granted this is a bit slow and doesnt let you do things you want but after a while and a few mins messing around with a few settings its works like a gem- its less intrusive and does the job- although i still prefer the free zvg and zone alarm ;-)

5 out of 5 stars really efficient at its job   August 21, 2006

Having learnt to my cost of how important it is to be fully protected especially whilst on the internet i have used both Norton and presently Mcafee and both systems work just as well.

What i really like about Mcaffees internet setup is its ability to test your firewall and scan your computers files independantly.
Testing to see if there are any viruses or other undesirables can take up to 20minutes to scan every file but seeing the message that your computer is clean and running properly is a big relief.

The firewall test takes around 4minutes and displays each port on your computer being completely visible if all is well.

Updating the softwear off the internet couldnot be easier, infact the programme can be a bit over protective in not allowing pop ups etc but switching off that is simplicity aswell. For somebody who is new to computing Mcaffee make their internet security very user friendly you donot really have to think it is all there at the click of the mouse.

Which system you MUST buy depends on which you prefer.I would be quite happy to revert to Norton but at the moment Mcaffee works just beautifully,i have almost become a bit too laidback because my computer works well all the time and make sure yours does aswell with these simply brilliant vital pieces of softwear.

1 out of 5 stars ..McAFee stuffs up your ISP DON'T BUY   August 12, 2006

I agree with the other users. This package is a total nightmare! I have Tiscali ISP and it won't let me read my emails, throws you out of other internet sites without warning, slows your computer down, no manual in the box just two CD's!. It also stops you trying to get onto the internet and even trying trying to use Word for example.

This is is the worst anti virus software, I have tried Norton but will use AVG which is a little gem.

In short stay away from this package, waste of money and is total crap.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing Software   August 6, 2006

Having used Mcafee server products in a work environment I went ahead and bought 2 copies of Security Suite for Home/Office PCs. Mcafee may have a good track record with antivirus solutions but this product has behaved atrociously ever since installation.

Even though it was installed on a brand new laptop, and registered correctly, Spamkiller still insisted on product verification every few days. Contacting Mcafee support about this got me a very long and convoluted response suggesting things that needed to be done to put this right, including reconfiguring Internet Explorer, deleting Mcafee ActiveX components and running a registry update, followed by re-installation. All the reinstall did was cause other Suite components to verify the product every few days as well.

In addition, Spamkiller seems to behave very badly with Outlook 2003, causing it to lock up while it checks the inbox, and frequently making it crash on exit. This happened on both PCs.

Even after uninstalling the Suite (I've moved to another product now) Spamkiller left 150mb of files sitting on my hard drive. If I could get a refund I would.
