5 out of 5 stars Excellent tool   May 2, 2008

Within approximately 30 minutes of installing the software, I was able to start using the voice recognition very accurately. There are a number of tools which quickly help improve your accuracy. These include training words and analysing existing documentation for the type of words that you commonly use.

I'm pretty sure that a good set of microphone headphones has assisted in the quality of the experience. I used a Plantronics digital headset DSP400. Within a couple of days, I found that the speed of dictation is approximately 90 words per minute. I would say that the accuracy is a proximally in a region of 98%. I was regarded myself as a pretty good touch typist with a speed of approximately 50 words per minute. However, using this digital voice recognition is clearly much quicker and in many instances more accurate.

2 out of 5 stars Frustrating and slow   March 31, 2008

I have been using this software has some months now and have yet to find that it is in fact quicker than typing. Most of the time, having spent some time adjusting the microphone to the optimum position, it will type out words as you talk quite happily. However, the accuracy rate is rather poor - that 99% accuracy claimed by the makers is somewhat optimistic; but even 90% accuracy can result in complete gobbledygook.

The spoken words are recognized and appear in a small bar on the screen before being put into the body of the text. Occasionally, the words are recognized completely accurately and appear in the bar and yet fail to make it into the body of the text. This is incredibly irritating and time-consuming and results in the dictation becoming very stilted. Comparing what I've written when I have been purely typing and when I've been using Naturally Speaking, I find that I'm much more fluent and my words flow better when typing.

Once the text is on the paper, or rather the screen, it is necessary to proof read and correct all the errors. This is harder to do with Naturally Speaking as there are no spelling or typographical mistakes, just sections (and sometimes large swathes) of nonsensical text and it is not always easy to see what it was you intended to say in the first place.

Voice recognition software may be making great strides forward, but it is not there yet. (I started writing this review using the software, but the accuracy was so poor I gave up and resorting to typing!)

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but very good   March 5, 2008

I can't give this product 5 stars, even though I want to, because even though the technology in this product is pretty exciting, it doesn't always get it right! Probably a 90% success rate, although you can train it to do better. Still if your like me and ENJOY a little tinkering with something novel like this product, which will ultimately give the goods. Then you are on to a winner
