5 out of 5 stars Nice unobtrusive virus/tune up/backup package   August 16, 2008
Last month I was given Norton 360 (3 User Licence) (PC)to review so it's as well to compare the two products. I prefer Onecare- it's less in your face and needy. It's stil demanding that I go through a back up procedure as well as virus checking, defragging the hard drive and removing temporary internet files, but all I get is a balloon popping up at start up- not a full message box like Norton, ticking me off for not being a good girl. It also doesn't hijack Internet Explorer's menu bar with a big green strip like Norton to show you the IE7 phishing filter is on (Onecare supposedly has a phishing filter, but as I'm visiting safe sites it's stayed in the background somewhere)

Norton does have a useful/irritating extra- an ability to store your passwords for autocompletion in "identity safe". Personally I felt that I didn't want my financial sites' details stored for any ingenious hackers. You could instruct it never to ask about a particular site. But you had to log into identity safe every time otherwise it would interrupt you half way through putting in the password and you'd have to log in to Norton and start again.

So-Onecare seems to do it's job and not interfere with your computing - so I'm happy and keeping it as my virus checker of choice.

4 out of 5 stars Good All Round Protection - childs-play to set-up!   August 15, 2008
All in all One-Care is a very good and intuitive all round protection package for your PC or hone network - it has all the basics (Firewall, Anti-Virus, Malware, Anti-spyware) and a few additional items that can be pretty helpful such as Tune-up, windows update, back up and restore.

Probably its best feature is ease of set-up - especially for home networks with perhaps a parent looking for some control over the overtly eager and virus friendly kids! Simply insert the disk and one-care will automatically detect all other PC's, laptops or printers and "add" them to the One-Care "circle". Once complete you can assign a single PC to act as the "Hub" - enabling the operator to view and change settings on all others linked to the circle (thus providing you with pretty strong parental or network control)! Another extra feature I really like is One-Care's "start-up" manager. Hidden in one of the sub-menus is one of the easiest and simplest start-up mangers I've seen - enter here and all your start up programmes are shown with check boxes - One-care can advise which ones you don't need (and slow down your PC!), but most are obvious. Simply check the ones you don't want and "Voila" there gone and your speed is back - nice little feature!

If being intuitive is a plus it also has one or two draw-backs. The ultra simple traffic light coding system is great, namely:-
RED - serious alert
AMBER - requires attention
Green - OK
However if you haven't done a maintenace task such as backing up your files the status will revert to RED. I'd far rather that One-Care provided more alert options so that the controller could set their own parameters for changing the status to RED (I'd want RED to mean exactly that - imminent danger of attack!). Like most.

One-Care is definitely not compatible with other PC protection programmes and if you are confident in its abilities - these should all be disabled.

In summary 5 stars for absolute ease of use, centralised hub control, doing all the basics very well and intuition, however one star deducted for that very same intuition with regards to the alerts themselves - for most home PC users failure to back-up won't be a RED alert - a hacker trying to get into your network should be - One-Care needs to allow the user to differentiate between the two!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing   August 15, 2008
I bought this as it offered protection that was unlikely to slow down our various Windows computers (6 in our house). Three were still protected with Kaspersky, but I had noticed reduction in overall performance, so I tried Once Care. However, the database, even when fully up-to-date, does not properly protect from worms and other viruses while Kaspersky does. We now forward suspect items to machines using Kaspersky for proper checking.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Use   August 14, 2008
Windows Live Care gets hefty criticism because of its association with Microsoft. It is often regarded as insecure, overly expensive or overly complicated. None of these problems have arisen for me.

Where other software such as Norton or McAffee fail is in the system overuse. This isn't present with Windows live care, as the processor usage for me rarely exceeds 10k, about 0.1% of my processing power. Its fast, the tune up utility works extremely well in speeding up my PC and so far it has yet to let anything dangerous through (something I have verified with 3 other anti-virus/firewall utilities). It isn't too secure either, as in it doesn't require me to allow everything, but looks at what I have already allowed and compares the content and relationships. It isn't like zone alarm or Kaspersky with constant pop-ups that cripple lesser machines. One Care updates regularly and and I would feel extremely comfortable relying solely on this software to protect my PC.

There are a couple of downsides though. Because of the overly fragmented hard drive on my machine, One Care is unable to complete the system defragment in its tune up, and I can find no way around this. Also, when updates are required there is no built in system to do so, but takes the user to a website to download updates; it is a tad messy, but fully functional nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars Good product for those of us who aren't computer experts   August 12, 2008
This is easy to use and provides all the necessaries, and as such I would recommend it.
It covers all the basic security needs, protecting against viruses, setting up firewalls and helping prevent ID theft. Like I said, it is easy to use, with a navigatable taskbar that allows you to perform scans when you want, and that informs you when you need to. The only thing I have to moan about is the tune-up, which pretty much seems to do little more than a system check up and defrag, which I have been doing for a long time of my own accord. All in all, a reliable and sturdy product.
