5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed   August 7, 2008

This is the only book I've ever bought twice after throwing all my 'diet' books out a few years ago after vowing never to go 'on a diet' again.

I've followed all the major commercial diets and even lost four stones on one of them, but they never once taught me how to eat healthily (and there's always a way to 'cheat', on all of them!). Hence, after coming off the diet I put all the weight back on and a couple more stones on top for good measure. Sound familiar?

This year I decided that I needed to sort my life out for once and for all and get healthy (oh and lose about 6 stones too!!), and I remembered this book and the common sense it seemed to make.

I'm relieved that I'll never have to go on a so-called 'diet' again (though I was tempted because it worked before), but as the stats keep telling us, 99% of us regain all the weight (and then some)when we stop following them.

This book consistantly makes real references to how I do/did eat. I'm not going to say it'll change you overnight, but her tools will make you realise just how addicted you are to food and how to work through making lasting and real changes for the rest of your life. The focus isn't on what the scales tell you (thank God!), but teaches you the concept of true choice and has helped me no end to break the chains of my 'diet' mentality which have weighed me down (!) for many, many years, to the point of depression.

It's not always easy as it teaches you how to face your addiction head on and take responsibility for what you put in your mouth, but now I'm starting to get it I'm really taking positive steps to be who I really am, deep down. I can't recommend this book highly enough to anyone who has a problem with food and wants to change, for good.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Tools   August 2, 2008

For many years I have always struggled with my weight & although I eat healthy I would find my weight flactuating and unable to control it without constantly working out in the gym. I then began to realise that it was not what I ate but how much I ate that was the problem. I did not understand that overeating was infact an addiction just like smoking. I could not put the book down and have now ordered the handy pocket book & CD inorder to reinforce what I have learnt. Gillian's book just made something click and I have managed to put into practice her tools which have certainly worked for me.
I am now a healthy fit person who is very happy & contented with both my body size health and fitness.

5 out of 5 stars Such a relief   July 28, 2008

I bought the book about a year ago and started practicing what Gillian Riley suggests with a fair amount of success. I knew it was an approach that could work for me, but I learn best from people not from books and I quickly realised that I wanted to go on one of her courses. I am very pleased that I did. The course and the book cover the same material, but you cannot hide from the point in the course.

This is tough love, but boy does it work! My whole relationship with food is changing; layers of neurosis are peeling away and I am no longer afraid of food or myself. Trust has entered into the equation, and it's transformative.

Gillian's approach isn't a quick fix, but it is a profound one because her tools and techniques actually work. She doesn't demand perfection but she does demand ruthless self-honesty. Like I said, it's tough love.

I am now more relaxed around food, and I am confident in how I behave near food. I have more choices and options and I'm no longer afraid of being hungry. I trust myself to take care of myself, and I've stopped beating myself up about eating and not eating the right things.

If you have trouble losing weight because you eat too much or because diets don't work, then I thoroughly recommend both the book and the course - especially if you are spending a small fortune on groups such as Weight Watchers or Lighter Life.

5 out of 5 stars A revelation: I don't think you will be disappointed   July 27, 2008

Having tried diet books and slimming groups, I knew that something was fundamentally missing, which is why these approaches ultimately fail. This book provided me with the missing piece of the puzzle: deal with the eating as an addiction. This book explains clearly how it is done. You won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Eating less is impossible unless I cut out the crap, book did not help.   May 11, 2008

If your an over eater, or addicted to food, I reccomend looking into magnesium deficiency and eating healthily, i.e. fish, vegetables, olive oil, beans, lentils and decreasing meat, dairy and alcohol. Gillian reckons you can eat anything but just do it in moderation./ Well, if I could do this I we would not need the book. I felt the book has some good ideas but the book was not helpful because it just did not change me. For me it was like saying to an alcoholic, drinking less: Say goodbye to alcoholism. When I eat the addictive foods, sugar, wheat, milk, something happens!!!! Its a bit like mask... I go straaanggge! I want more and more and it doesn't matter what I read, I know there is something wrong. I do get relief cutting down to a minimum meat, sugar, wheat, and dairy, and increasing vegetables, fish, beans, pears.
