4 out of 5 stars Rollerghoster   January 25, 2008

I found this a very interesting, if somewhat clause-sub-clausy, exploration of Spain which, while many sentences were structured like this one, a feature that was occasionally annoying and, from time to time caused me to have to start the paragraph again which, you will no doubt agree might be annoying... er... where was I?

It jumps back and forth through time and Essspace touching on the many dynamic features of a turbulent history both recent and ancient. I often found myself angered not by the text but by the genuine horrors that Spain's people have had to endure. Tremlett doesn't pull his punches when it comes to these segments; nor does his love for this country ever waver.

It was a fascinating read, a book given to me as a farewell gift prior to my ex-patriating myself to Madrid for an undetermined period. I still can't read Spanish, but I'm glad I read about their ghosts.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling and entertaining insight into Spain!   December 28, 2007

Since I started this book 1 week ago, I have been unable to put it down. It is easy to read, informative, entertaining and educational in many ways. It offers an insight on everyday life in Spain. It covers everything from the secrets of the Franco period to tourism and the sex trade in Spain.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, funny, an incredibly accurate picture   October 23, 2007

I enjoyed this book immensely, it can be entertaining and some times incredibly sad. Tremlett can make you cry and laugh out loud all in the same chapter. An extremely accurate picture of us Spaniards, I couldn't stop nodding whilst reading this excellent book. From how we love using bleach for cleaning to our attitude towards sex, the accuracy of Tremlett's descriptions is very impressive. A must read for any European interested in modern Spain.

3 out of 5 stars You must be really interested in Spain to like it   October 21, 2007

The book is a serious report, full of unknown data, testimonies and research, but if one is not an enthusiast of Spain it becomes tedious to read such a detailed account of things that in the most part could be summarized to half. I would say that statements are too repetitive (over saturation of arguments on the same subject). This is not a reading for someone wishing for a quick review on contemporary Spain. I could not maintain my interest on the book for more than few minutes, and thus it took me a full week to finish it. The book is not bad but I was probably not the one that can appreciate it to its full extent.

This is a superb book and highly recommended for those with even a passing interest in the real Spain. The first chapters are hard going as they deal with some of the reality of the irrational horrors of a deeply divisive civil war. They are, however, a necessary foundation for the joys of the later chapters of this book. Whether discussing the inticracies of flamenco, or macho culture at its worst in attitudes to brothels or the wonderful (and accurate) description of the attire of middle class children in Spain's big cities. Next time you are in Seville or Madrid during the PASEO you too will think you've travelled back to 1955 when you see little girls with big bows or little boys in their slicked back hair and sky-blue braces and shorts. Enjoy this book.
