5 out of 5 stars Can I crew?   June 24, 2008
Just read both (Carcassonne and Indian river) for the second time.. Loved them first time, even better the second. I wonder how Monica puts up with Terry sometimes. The humor deserves rereading, as some of us of slightly slower brains might miss something the first time through.
An excellent book, well written. I could believe I was there!

5 out of 5 stars a cracking read   June 11, 2008
Bought 'Narrow dog' and their other book after hearing the author and his wife briefly on Radio 4. I bought both to read on a trip to New York and I enjoyed them so much, I did what is really unusual for me, I read them very slowly. I didnt want them to finish. The author reminded me in some ways of Dylan Thomas. He is poetic, quirky and full of fun, in a dry old stick sort of way. Terry and his wife are obviously determined not to end their days in a nursing home somewhere, though clearly, Jim, their little whippet who hates the water, would be more than happy for them to give up adventuring. Personally, I would love to read more. Terry has a light touch, is clearly an educated man with a lifetime of stored literary references in his head, not to mention a determination to achieve 'the impossible'. Sailing a narrow boat across the English channel? I ask you! More please. About anything. I am sure I would be entertained. A great read!

5 out of 5 stars this book is not only for canalboat enthusiasts and dog lovers   June 9, 2008
One so often hears about the severe weather patterns of the USA but I had not realised there was such an onslaught along the eastern seaboard. This book should be required reading for anyone contemplating holidays or emigration in the area.
This nail biting account of an odyssey, down the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, aboard a British narrowboat is often chilling but is delivered by the author with great dollops of humour mostly directed against himself.
His descriptions are vivid and succinct as in the case of Jim the whippet who has
"the eyes of Princess Diana, the legs of Sebastian Coe, the mind of Ronnie Biggs."
In a land where everything from minute red algae, and unseen biting insects, to giant alligators is out to get you I was left thinking "it shouldn't happen to a dog!"
The final touching poem to his wife (who must be a saint to put up with him) brought tears to my eyes. A real roller coaster ride of a book that is a sheer joy to read.

5 out of 5 stars anns review   June 2, 2008
This book was so entertaining I loved to hear all about the different places you visited and the interesting people you met and of cause the things that Jim got up too.The amusing way you wrote the book was great it felt as though I was with you on the journey enjoying ever minute.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully enjoyable. Brilliantly observed!   May 20, 2008
Like many others, having read Narrow dog to Carcassone, I eagerly awaited the sequel. A mad but wonderful attempt to take the Phyllis May to the USA. The story is told in Darlington's unique style with his delightful sense of humour. The style takes a little getting used to, but once you are there, his take on life is a joy.It is lovingly observed down to the last detail. It makes you wish you were there for all the good bits, and certainly I now want to visit the East coast of the States. But being a landlubber and complete Gongoozler I shall do it by car! I found myself chuckling out loud many times during the story, and found myself lost in joyful thought about his poetry. Truly a delightful story, full of gentle humour and observation this book is a must read. If you have not read "Carcassone" first, some things might be lost on you, but you will be eager to read it to catch up. Indian River is wonderful. I have no regrets about the book and no hesitation in suggesting an immediate purchase! Enjoy!
