1 out of 5 stars I only read till the end in the hope it would get better.   June 17, 2008
4 out of 9 found this review helpful

Cliched, obvious, dull ... I can only surmise most of the other reviewers are either family or don't read very often because this is one of the worst books I've read in a long time. The main character is irritating and unbelievable, the other characters are two dimensional and the story line? Awful. The author didn't even bother to visit Shetland until after she'd written the book and it shows. The quality of writing is also very poor. The general premise was so promising but ultimately I have been left very disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars scores points as a thriller, not as a novel   June 15, 2008

As a thriller this is not a bad book at all. It is the story of Tora Hamilton, an obstetrician, recently settled on one of the Shetland islands, who discovers in her field around the house, the body of a young woman whose heart has been taken and on whose back runes have been carved.
Finding the police more than reluctant to pursue the investigation seriously, Tora will do her best to unravel the mystery. Her life will become more and more complicated as she realises that several people, among whom her husband , her boss as well, would like her not to take such a personnal interest in the case.
It is as a novel that the book fails. When I read I like to see sentences that I would never have been able to write myself. I like authors to avoid as many cliches as possible. Here, the author just seems to go for all the unsubtle twists in the plot. The heroine will be deeply attracted by her mesmeric boss (although she has only been married for five years to the most gorgeous husband on Earth, if we are to believe her), she will feel lust for him even a few seconds after she has been nearly scared to death (how she goes from one extreme to the other isn't plausible)and the reader has to deal with quite a few sentences so trite they make painful reading.

4 out of 5 stars A mixture of modern crime and local legend   June 10, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Written in the first person, Tora Hamilton is the lead character, an obstetrician at the local hospital. She's new and has yet to be accepted as 'one of the islanders'. Another strong female lead is DC Dana Tulloch, investigating the body which Tora has discovered buried on her land. I found I swapped back and forth with my pronunciation of 'Dana': Darna...to Dayna (darn-a the X-Files!!) ;-)

Tora is very persistant...and bringing out the Nancy Drew in me, was easy to relate to.

After the discovery of a body at the very beginning of the book I felt there was a slight slow patch, but it soon passed and had me hooked. I anticipated some things but as I was never certain, it didn't detract from my enjoyment at all.

I really liked the contrast between the wild and beautiful but remote isles of Shetland and the up to the minute technology that modern crimes necessitate.

Looking forward to more from this author.

Fantastic - read it in no time at all. Kept me hooked until the end. I will eagerly await the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down   June 6, 2008

What an amazing book - Have just finished reading this and can honestly say I truly enjoyed every page turning page. Have read some negative reviews on this work by S. J. Bolton and I disagree with them all. I found it gripping, brill story with good characters most of whom you didn't know the goodies from the baddies. I just loved it and I hope lots of people find the same intense enjoyment from reading Sacrafice as I have.
