4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informative read   April 24, 2007
I found this book really interesting. Chris Stewart has an engaging writing style and his tale of setting up a home in Andalucia was written in a thoroughly engaging way. He documents some great moments with humour and humility. I felt that his writing was very heartfelt. The characters he describes jump from the page. A very nice read.

5 out of 5 stars It's enought to persuade you to buy a Spanish farm   March 30, 2007

I loved this book so much, that as soon as I finished it, I ordered the next two.

Chris Stewart brings his adventures on his farm in the Spanish hills to life in a well written, easy to read and, in parts, very funny book.

Thoroughly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Hardship 'lite'   August 1, 2006

This is a very pleasant book and if you are in need of balm from the sort of modest drama that is provided on television by Monarch of the Glen or Michael Palin's travelogues, then this is the book for you.

Chris Stewart does a decent job of describing beautiful countryside, ubiquitous local 'characters', delicious simple meals and frustrating tradesmen. However, in terms of insight into what it is really like to go through the challenge of building a life in a land you don't really understand (and which doesn't understand you), you might be disappointed. This is hardship 'lite'.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps my favorite travel / dream destination series   June 1, 2006

Fancy dreaming of a house in the rural spanish hills, tales of wine, good food and languid afternoons, then tales of the Aljapurras are just what the doctor ordered. I love this series and acn't wait to read his latest "almonds" book. Read them now, the perfect antidote to cold british summers
