AN INSPIRED ACCOUNT OF LIFE IN RURAL MALLORCA. October 8, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I finally got around to reading Anna Nicholas' book `A Lizard in my Luggage'; I hate that it's taken me so long - I have been missing out! If you haven't yet bought a copy of this joyous book then I suggest you do so! It is a delightfully written journal of Anna's first year in Mallorca, interspersed with her fleeting and increasingly reluctant business trips to London as her love of the rural life on the island envelopes her. It is witty, eccentric and captures absolutely the rusticity of Mallorca and its indigenous inhabitants with whom she and her family forge a close bond. I sat beside her on the stairs sharing her tears as she and son Ollie mourned the kittens that their beloved cat lost and laughed out loud at Anna's interrogation of friend Ed regarding his erstwhile American internet girlfriend; his ultimate riposte is hilarious. I also cheered her on as she courageously tackled the Palma half marathon. There is but one thing wrong with this book; once begun it is impossible to put down; so enjoyable is the magical literary journey that one finds oneself, all too soon, on the final page and craving for the sequel...there's bound to be one, isn't there? I have sent gifts of this book to my family and friends in the USA and England who visit me in Mallorca. I feel that during the long winter a little sunshine will enter their world through Anna's words.
A charming take on upping sticks October 4, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I discovered this book in Waterstones and the travel manager recommended it because I was looking for a different take on the usual type of escaping to the sun books. I found it an invaluable tool prior to my first visit to Soller in Mallorca. I guess this is the town she's based it all on. It was very touching, funny and also hugely informative about the local customs and way of life. I loved the mad London sections too-reminded me of myself at times! I couldn't put it down and read it in two days while sitting in the hotel garden. I wholeheartedly recommend it.Although it's from a small publishing house I think this is the sort of book to be recommended by word of mouth. A little gem.
A wry slant on living abroad September 17, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is not your typical run away to the sun book, thankfully. It is a very funny take on living between two places, the hot seat of london and the more sedate Mallorcan hills. This is not a Mallorca known to many Brits. It is a beautiful, serene place with wonderful rich fiestas and local colour and touching, real characters. The book uses the Catalan dialect at times which adds to its authenticity. London is a mad and frenetic scene, which has the author spinning like a top. I liked the fast writing pace of the town and the laid back writing style in the hills. A nice device although it doesn't feel that cynical. I hope she'll write another soon.

I picked this book up in Tesco's the night before travelling to Majorca on holiday, much to the amusement of my family. I had no idea what reviews it had and thought it would offer a little insight into Majorcan life while I was cooking my body at the poolside.
I absolutely loved it and couldn't put it down and was equally thrilled to discover when I returned home and read the reviews on line that I wasn't the only one!
The author did not glamorise life in Majorca. What initially appeared to be an extremely stressful existence i.e. discovering whether basics such as electricity and hot water actually worked on a daily basis, waiting 8 months for a pair of curtains that you ordered to be made and leaving your home unlocked without worry of thieves, would take some getting used to!
You get the feeling that the Majorcan people are far more content and family orientated they have learned to relax and enjoy life for what it is - the authors only worry is whether the frogs will return to the bottom of the garden!- well done.
Very entertaining August 1, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Just couldn't put this book down, and now I can't wait for the next book to find out what everyone is up to! I've been to many of the places Anna talks about, her stories bring them so much to life I was transported. She's a great storyteller.
If you've read Peter Kerr's Mallorcan adventures and enjoyed them, then you'll enjoy this one.
