3 out of 5 stars Interesting but lacking some charisma   July 25, 2007

This is an worthwhile follow up to Long Way Round. Even as a non-motorcyclist this keeps me interested, but it is lacking the energy and entertainment value of LWR. Partly this is due to the fact that it is not as 'matey' an adventure, and also the lack of music compared to LWR leaves the programme feeling flat. A soundtrack of great tunes would certainly have helped.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Long Way Round   March 26, 2007

Most people will have bought this dvd after watching and enjoying the earlier series with Charley Boorman & Ewan McGregor. This effort is decent, but the charisma wattage of the central character has dimmed considerably in the absence of McGregor. Instead we get to watch Charley Boorman whinge his way around what admittedly comes across as a race which is not for the faint-hearted. It's good, just not as good as its' predecessor.

4 out of 5 stars good adventure story   January 5, 2007

knowing how this ended (I won't spoil it for you!) before watching and being a big fan of long way round I had low expectations of this video, but having just finished it - I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had to keep reminding myself that Charlie is an actor, and you have to question how much is actually staged. Eg the camera is running in the production office exactly when the phone rings from Africa ? Maybee? The other slight irritation was Ewan MacGregor poping up to keep kissing Charlie although he didn't seem to have any role other than star power. The main story though portrays how much preparation (and cost) needs to go into something like this, and how incredibly hard and brutal the rally is. Like bikes and adventure - recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Wow - What An Adventure   January 2, 2007

An account of how dreams become a reality. It shows that you really can try and do something significantly outside of your comfort zone. It shows all the preparations and the Lisbon-Dakar journey itself through the eyes of Charley and his two other partner riders, as well as their back up team. You get the a true sense that you are with them - going through their highs and their lows. You see just how dangerous this event is. I know nothing about motorbikes, but found the DVD just as rivetting as Long Way Round. Whilst Charley and all the other contestants might all be crazy, they all deserve our utmost respect!

My good lady wife purchased this as a christmas present for me. We had all enjoyed Long Way Round (LWR) and we watched this Dakar adventure together as a family in two 'deep immersion' sessions.

First off - the DVD cover should in all fairness carry a warning about bad language - Charlie slips into the vernacular with grim regularity and while we can all accept this sort of lingo from time to time and when the occassion warrants, he really does use it like punctuation.

This DVD version of the Dakar adventure will appeal to all ages and to those who have no interest per se in motorcycling. For the enthusisiast however, it is probably less satisfying with rather less of the onboard footage and aerial captured stuff to show more of the dynamics of the 'ride', than they would consider to be ideal.

It is difficult to compare to LWR because they are by their nature fundamentally different. But what both of these adventures do serve to demonstrate is that these sort of things are actually achievable by ordinary mortals and that pouring huge resources into any activity does not of itself guarantee success.
