3 out of 5 stars Poor DVD, Better Book?   March 30, 2008

This isn't actually a thrilling documentary (it's very short, given how long Dave was in the USA). It doesn't go into much detail about the journey, spending more time pondering about the lack of petrol than talking to the people Dave met on the way.

BUT it's worth remembering that - in fact - Dave set out to do this journey for a BOOK, not a FILM - the film idea only came later, and Dave only agreed if it could be one filmmaker (not a car full following behind) and that the cameraman would also be the Producer/Director.

So, enjoy the DVD, but wait for the book too.

I , like many others have really enjoyed his other work. What an amazing idea to go to the USA and try and get across it without giving a penny to "THE MAN" . But it just doesn't work , it is all about getting petrol , not much about the food and very little about the Hotels . There were few places of interest , this is less a documentary , more a "If a man has to travel 200km to the next petrol station how many litres of petrol will he use" math sum . Im telling you if you watch this you will never run out of petrol again as you will know the sum off by heart. By the end I was hoping that that he just ran out of petrol and the car just blew up ! Without Dave inside of course !

2 out of 5 stars disappointing   March 10, 2008

I was also disappointed in Gorman's latest project. He drives across a continent for about four months and all he can come up with is 75 minutes of footage? How is that possible? Toward the end the trip it seems the goal of the trip is less about patronizing independent businesses than getting back to the UK in time for Xmas. Gorman seems miserable throughout and unfortunately we as the viewers are along for the ride.

5 out of 5 stars Great Road Documentary On Sticking It To "The Man"   February 29, 2008

This is a brilliant little film to show that true independence maybe facing extinction due to globalisation, but Dave shows it just maybe possible to make it across America (In A Very Round About Way) without paying "The Man". There genuinely is some great moments along the journey and ultimately the film leaves you feeling with mixed emotions about the future, "The Man" may want to take over the place and make everywhere the same but its Man-Kind who can fight the good fight and not make it easy for them!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing   February 23, 2008

I was really looking forward to watching this, thinking it would be a great insight into what is left in the way of mom and pop stores in small town USA and some interesting places. Frankly, I found it irritating almost from the start. To think of driving a rural 4,000 miles in a nail of a car which only manages 17 mpg and at no stage, even when encouraged to do so not only by me watching but also a gas station owner, carrying any spare fuel was just exasperating. The self-pitying and agonising, resulting purely from a lack of trip planning, was excrutiating and embarrassing. He does manage to find some nice small town folk and places though (even if they do have to tow him into them).
