The Best Adaptation of Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" - Believe Me! May 4, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Before I ever knew about Jane Austen and her novels, I'd watched BBC "Pride and Prejudice" - when I was a teenager. I have to say that I fell in love with whole story; I adore Ms. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy slow bubbling romance; the Bennet family made me laugh. I even had a crush on Colin Firth then. LOL... Anyway, I love everything about the series; so much so that I took up reading Jane Austen's novels.
A few years ago, I finally bought the DVD of this BBC Series from Amazon.Co.UK, and proudly added it to my movie collection.
I saw the Hollywood re-make of Pride and Prejudice, but that didn't do justice to Jane Austen's novel. The BBC's version is 10X better. I've always say that the British have always been very good at making period dramas.
The Best Jane Austen adaptation ever!! April 16, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is by far the best Jane Austen adaptation. The incredible subtlety in some of the scenes between Lizzie and Mr Darcy are heart warming. On re-reading the book and then watching it again, you can truly appreciate how these two characters have changed and bettered themselves for each other. Having read some of the other reviews with regards to the Kiera Knightly film, I can only wonder if those in so much favour of this version have ever read the book?? It does seem to be the trend to change or modernise Jane Austen's books, and I agree to this to an extent. But to actually change the values and morals Jane Austen took great care to illustrate and portray, is inexcusable. This excellent BBC version will always be the best version for me as it celebrates all that Jane Austen was and why she is such a respected author. A classic!
The one and only March 5, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Simply best of all adaptions of Jane Austen's novels. True to the book, excellent actors, good photo and an explosive chemistry between Firth and Ehle.

Six reasons why this is just awesome February 19, 2008 16 out of 19 found this review helpful
I had never read an Austen book, nor watched any adaptations before this one. I had even held Austen with a little disdain, perhaps because she was so overwhelmingly popular. But after watching this mini-series, I am a true Austen convert: I can now see why her books are so timelessly loved.
This mini-series is absolutely outstanding for these reasons:
1) Jennifer Ehle is truly praiseworthy for her rendition of Elizabeth. In particular, she has a gift of laughing with just her eyes - no wonder Mr Darcy was immediately taken by her 'fine eyes'! She is one of those talented actresses who is able to produce a huge variety of emotions without having to resort to excessive eyebrow acrobatics or superficial expressions that is so characteristic of popular actresses today. She is able to bring the sharp-tongued Elizabeth to life without making her bitchy; instead, bringing a true natural warmth to the character. She is not the traditional drop-dead gorgeous Hollywood star, but this on the contrary makes her seem all the more authentic as an Austen protagonist.
2) Equally sublime is Colin Firth's acting - quite apart from the obvious heart-throb properties, of course! Despite smiling broadly just once throughout the series, he is a master of ambiguous expressions and half-smiles, that his love for Elizabeth emanates off the screen with so few words. My personal favourite scene is in Episode 5, where Elizabeth visits Pemberley and is turning the pages for Darcy's sister Georgiana. Elizabeth's and Darcy's eyes meet and without uttering any words or exchanging smiles, the mutual affection between them positively radiates from their eyes. In a modern society where love is so explicitly and crudely spelled out, such subtlety and restraint creates an infinitely more romantic story.
3) The script. I afterwards went to read the book and was pleased to see that the majority of Austen's original dialogue, the primary source of her wit and charm, were preserved. The series is kept as close to the book as possible and is probably one of the most faithful Austen adaptation on screen.
4) The length, although perhaps off-putting for Austen newcomers, is a true advantage - there is sufficient time for character and relationship development, as well as recreating the unique atmosphere from the book. Rather than a hash of a story compressed in a 2-hour movie, the format of the mini-series gives the story time to flesh itself out and create a more persuasive and wholesome end product.
5) The comedy. Mr Bennet's dry cynicism, Elizabeth's quick wit, Mr Collins' absurdity, Lydia's profanity, Lady Catharine's unwitting aloof humour... the story is rich with a myriad sources of wit.
6) The atmosphere and historical perspective. If you are anything like me and love period dramas, this mini-series will be a treat - and it is a fantastic insight into the constraints and rigid rules set down, particularly on women, at that time. It is of course necessary to take it all with a pinch of salt; Austen is often criticised for her lack of breadth and perspective in describing the society at that time, and perhaps giving too much of a rose-tinted, romance-centric view of life. However, Austen was not attempting to paint a full picture of the ins and outs of society; if you take the book & the film for what it is - a classic love story - you will enjoy it a lot more.
So, what are you waiting for? Just give it a go - you'll be surprised at how quickly you get hooked!
