4 out of 5 stars Wholly good.   October 13, 2006

Although this season may, at times make you feel embarrassed for the cast, it is still the best the BBC has to offer currently, far better than `reality TV' or monotonous soaps.. Some reviewers have noted the plot convolutes towards the end, this is true, however, this short-fall is far outweighed by the well acted episodes and the characters, despite not topping Tom, Danny and Zoe, are well-developed.
In all, this series it is certainly worth buying if not to watch, to fantasise about being a spy for the British government!

Personally, I think this is the best season so far... I like the change in characters and I like the story lines. Looking really forward to the next season!

4 out of 5 stars Well worth buying!   September 12, 2006

I was really hesitant to buy Series 4 after Series 3. I thought 1 and 2 were good but started to meander as various characters were written out. Series 3 felt like all the writers went on vacation and good actors were left with ridiculous storylines.

The good news is that the show is back to its old form! If you liked series 1 and 2, the the show has found itself again and picks up the pace with improved storylines, better writing, and interesting, new characters. (Yes, the characters are a little underdevelped and the relationships rushed, but everything can't be perfect.)

Kudos to the writers!

2 out of 5 stars The weak link   August 11, 2006

As someone who highly enjoyed Season Three for its high drama and emotional bits, I found Season Four pretty mundane. The Spooks have faced most of these threats before - mad bombers and racists spring particularly to mind - and the whole season seems like a bit of a re-hash.

The cast are now so far removed from their original body that it's hard to get attached to them. New characters Zafa and Jo aren't very interesting, and are certainly poor replacements for Danny and Zoe. The ousting of Fiona can be seen coming a mile off, and it's just unnecessary. Furthermore, the final episode has a convoluted final few minutes that pile on the twists and turns in a way that is daft, wholly implausible and deliberately over the top. The season as a whole is prone to this sort of thing.

Add to all this the fact that the direction is increasingly obsessed with silly zooms and flash-cuts, and the thing is starting to look as though it needs to perk up its audience's interests. Desperate tactics, I think.

I find this season to be a tired re-tread. Season Three doesn't nearly get the respect it deserved; sadly, I think Spooks should have ended there.

4 out of 5 stars Back on Track   July 26, 2006

After the short lull of series three, spooks is back in full swing. The increasingly beautiful collection of spies are here pitted against far right politicians, ex-spooks, and a terrorist group with literally every human on the earth as their targets, to name just a few.
The opening two parter is one of the best TV thrillers I've ever seen and spooks continues to prove it's often better than going to the movies. Though we lose some familiar faces and gain some new ones, it avoids the get-rid-of-someone-every-two-episodes syndrome of series three.
Basically, if you want some highly rewatchable and enjoyable thrillers then this series will not disapoint.
