One of the best Sci-fi movies of 1994. October 29, 2000 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
TIMECOP: A review by D-DAY Science Fiction Starring: Jean Claude Van Damme. Rated (18) for scenes of bloody strong level violence, lananuge and medium level sexual scenes. Imagine if time travellers who traveled through years in time and space, what if they manipulated history? That is the headline to Timecop, Timecop is in the tradition of Max Mad and Virtuosity, this film has good 3D special effects, a good futuristic setting and a action packed story. Van Damme (Five years before he starred in Universal Soldier: the return) stars in his best film since Universal soldier, another sci-fi film. The year is 1994, Max Walker (Van Damme) is a good cop, that is until mysterous time travellers brutally murder his wife Melissa (Mia Sara). 10 years later, Max has become a beaten down elite marshal of T.E.C, a futuristic police force where cops time travel to stop criminals from manipulating history. Max is coming close to discover Senator McComb's (Ron Silver) deadly plot, where Max decides he must stop him and he can also have the chance to save his wife. Van Damme is a incredible martial artist, and this is one of his greatest films, i reccomend it to Van Damme fans who have seen Universal Soldier: the return. Very good. ********** 10/10
Decent attempt at the age-old time travel theme July 19, 2000 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Timecop (1994) is another Peter Hyams sci-fi action-fest set in the near-future, with Jean-Claude Van Damme working as a federal agent for the Time Enforcement Commission, following the recent discovery of time travel. Slimy senator Ron Silver is bidding for the US Presidency and is willing to illegally utilise time travel and change history for his own ends (eg, sending his cronies back in time with laser-guided automatic rifles and holding-up 19th century US Troopers transporting gold back to Washington). There are enough plot holes here to fill a large quarry, but if you are not over-pedantic, this is actually quite an enjoyable, exciting movie. The excellent visual effects are used only where necessary, although the script is perhaps a little corny in places, but there's also a nice twist at the end. Hyams is a master at this kind of pacy actioner, and for once he ensures that Van Damme is'nt just kicking the hell out of people because there's nothing else to do within the plot. Van Damme even 'acts' a little in this future-shock thriller, something detractors of the 'Muscles From Brussels' may find unbelievable (including this reviewer !). Overall, this film is not a classic, but comes recommended for the generic action-flick lover, but don't go reading into the so-called 'storyline' too much, as it'll drive you crazy !
