This had all the signs of being rubbish June 6, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
A Hollwood version of a respected sci-fi novel plus Will Smith - this had all the signes of being rubbish - and it is. Why oh why do Hollywood scriptwriters think they can improve on good books when all the do is dumb them down into unbelievable trash. To give this film some credit it isn't as dreadful as Spielburg's War of the Worlds - but its not far off. Will Smith is out acted by the parked cars (but unusually doesn't have the mass product placements - ref I Robot), the story line has more holes than a sieve and the only relationship to Matheson's novel is the title. Utter trash. Don't waste your money. 1 star because the dog looks good in HD.
Will Smith at his best - and the dog was great as well ! June 2, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The first half of this film is outstanding, the second only average. The combination of a performance of real depth from Will and the very effective use of CGI to create the deserted city, deliver a palpable sense of post apocalyptic desolation. Will is alone of course with the exception of Sam, his dog, who gives him the only opportunity to cling to his fragile sanity. Ironically then the CGI that looks so great in the opening scenes seems to be the undoing of this film as the disturbing fate of the human race is revealed. This is highlighted by Sam who is portrayed using a real dog and is wonderful to watch but as a result makes the CGI animals and Dark Seekers look like the digital creations they really are. I think Steven Spielberg's realisation that a rubber shark was going to frighten precisely no one and his decision to keep it off the screen as much as possible is a principle that still holds true today.
So, as the suspense of the first half is replaced by the action and visuals of the second, a potentially great movie rounds out to a merely good one. The story also loses its credibility with the arrival of two new characters looking remarkably healthy and calm given the rigours of day to day survival in this bleak world. I think if I had managed to survive for three years in this environment at the very least I would have had bad hair.
The picture quality is probably the best I have seen on Blu-Ray so far, combining great detail with a natural look free of any obvious sharpening or edge enhancement. Sound is also great with contrasting use of effects channels to create the atmosphere of the deserted city as well as all the jumps and shocks of the action set pieces. I watched the theatrical release first and then the alternate ending and thought the more downbeat ending of the theatrical version better suited the arc of the story and seemed more believable than the alternate 'happy' ending.
I really enjoyed this film and total respect to Will Smith for a credible, believable performance that makes you really care about him and what happens to him - a fundamental that is too often overlooked by studios in their rush to show off their investment in CGI software. Anyone looking for a reference Blu-ray disc should add this to their collection.
A degree of sobriety May 30, 2008 The Movie So many people have panned this film because the CGI isn't as good as it could have been or the plot isn't anything new or original. My view - watch this film simply because of an outstanding performance by Will Smith. It is definitely not a five star movie, but Smith's believable portrayal of a frail, scarred individual is top drawer and drags this film up from a 3 to a 4, in much the same way as he did for Pursuit of Happyness.
Blue Ray Fantastic conversion with an amzing picturfe quality that really does show off the blu ray format. This is particularly the case in the opening sequence. Unfortunately, the crispness of the image does highlight the comparatively weak CGI, but perhaps that is more of a testament to the astounding creation of a desolate New York.
The alternate ending takes you on a completely different path from the original, and I think this really does boil down to personal preference. What it certainly does do is fill some of the plot holes from the cinematic release, but personally I still prefer the original ending.
Recommended.
Does not work on PC blu-ray players May 30, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Maybe other peoples' experience with this is different to mine but I could not get this blu-ray disk to play properly on my PC BD drive. Others work fine, but this one just goes to a blank screen. I have read that certain studios make their BDs incompatible with PC players, so maybe this is one of them.
all the gear & no idea May 18, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Virus, zombies, one person with the cure?? Great concept, been around a while though & milked to heck already, story is full of holes, ridiculous situations, ridiculous story, stuck there for 3 years & no attempt to go anywhere, spend a bit of time looking for a cure, a lot of time chasing deer, has keys to a shop he locks in a city with no inhabitants except zombies, alternate ending??? no way I can sit through any of that again, definately one to rent & not one to buy. If you were in a city with no-one else would you look behind you when backing up, would you chase deer in your car shooting out the window or just sit & wait for them to appear, if there is this place of hope on the hill why don't they radio him back, when he spends the whole film preserving his life at the end he blows himself up with a grenade when he could of killed them but got awa y with the woman & child too. Alternate ending isn't much better where he does go off with them, it's a cheap imitation of resident evil which has been there, done that, & did it much better.
