A template browser makes it easy to see what's available by displaying thumbnail views for the selected category. Once you have chosen a template you can refine it by choosing options from the wizard panel in the "Studio Bar" to the right of the editing window. The Studio Bar provides direct access to object properties. It holds palettes for fonts and text paragraph styles, colours and colour schemes, line weights and styles as well as clip art and gallery objects--editable 3-D text, logos, flashes, coupons and so on, that can be dragged and dropped directly onto the page.

Text handling is reasonably advanced for a budget application, including pair kerning, drop caps, character spacing and leading and you can save text attributes as style sheets providing quick formatting and consistency throughout your publication. The ability to put text in shaped frames, combined with an improved text wrap feature means more scope for dynamic layouts. There is also a comprehensive suite of proofing tools including a spell checker, thesaurus, word and character counts. Long document publishers will be pleased to see index, table of contents and headers and footers wizards.

A new OLE flyout button launches one of several applets for creating special objects such as logos, tables and calendars. LogoPlus is great for creating small graphics quickly and easily and there is a very good selection of samples which you can use as they come or quickly adapt to your own purpose. --Ken McMahon
