2 out of 5 stars A big disappointment   June 9, 2008

Compared to the other Sony IC recorders I have (ICD-MS515 and ICD-BP150) the ICD-MX20 is a major let down - especially for the price. Although ICD-MX20 is very well-built it just cannot make good recordings. There are lots of phasing artefacts - even in the highest-quality mode.

For me the supplied software - Digital Voice Editor 3 - is functional enough if it could get along okay with the drivers for my Edirol FA-101 firewire audio interface that I use as an external soundcard. But clicking the volume control in DVE 3 seems to disable the Edirol drivers meaning that they have to be reinstalled. So I have removed DVE 3 from the PC and now use Sony's WMP plug-in to play .msv files on the computer. Then, for converting .msv files to other formats, I use NCH SWITCH.

Perhaps I have a rogue machine. However, I would recommend you test ICD-MX20 in a store before buying it. I give two stars mainly for the solid construction. But there must be other machines out there that can make far better recordings for this kind of money.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant - excellent recording quality   February 8, 2008

I bought this with the intention of using it to record me play the Piano and saxophone. Then if i played anything i really liked i wouldn't have to immediately stop and quickly try to write it out before i forgot it. Instead i could play the dictaphone back and then try to work it out again.
The recording quality is brilliant and the 4gb memory stick i bought seperately has recorded loads of conversations and music sessions and isn't even 25 percent full yet. My friend is now going to buy his own as with his current dictaphone he has to carry loads of tapes with him !
Whereas i only one small memory stick.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a decent dictaphone.

5 out of 5 stars Superb voice recorder   September 20, 2007

Good points: it delivers stunning stereo recordings due to a top quality built-in microphone and a great Sony CODEC. The supplied voice editing software works well. All functions are easily accessible from menus displayed on the LCD screen - a big improvement on older Sony models where options were hard to select or needed confusing combinations of button presses.

Negatives: it's expensive and the in-built memory is shamefully small (32MB = 85mins in the highest quality mode). Adding a cheap 1GB card I now have over 44hrs of recording time - more than I'll ever need!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic   September 29, 2006

Great clear sound recording, AAA Battery life is good, Constructed well (not plastic), easy to use, smaller than it looks on the screen, light weight, stylish, ALL ROUND GREAT PRODUCT HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The 32MB built in Memory, is fine but if you're going to uses this constantly, invest in a 1GB memory stick duo.
