Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Total Protection by a proxy service   February 27, 2008
An incredibly bad buy. Every attempt to visit a web site brings up an apology about the McAfee Proxy Service Module having to close. It relentlessly tells me that my home network is unprotected because it is not installed on my BT Vision box and the plugs that transfer the signals. McAfee anti virus products have me let me down before; I should have learnt my lesson. Unfortunately I saw a review that highly rated this offering which was the only reason I bought it.

1 out of 5 stars Poor customer service   December 29, 2007

I have no comment about the product but the customer service is quite appalling. After making it very difficult to even contact them, they compound it by simply not responding to e mails. My friend and I have e mailed four times in total with different problems and they just don't reply. From my own point of view, I want the auto renewal turned off and why you can't simply turn it off on their web-site is beyond me. You have to e mail them to ask them to turn it off otherwise they simply dip into your bank account ad infinitum. This is very worrying when they just don't respond. Do not buy this product . . look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars More trouble than it's worth   April 20, 2007

- ruined my wireless network setup - I had to recreate everything from scratch
- has a bug which means each e-mail I download gets copied to a randomly named file on my c: drive. So even if I delete the e-mail from outlook a copy remains on my disk. Other people on the McAfee forum have this as well. It's not obvious, just look in the root folder for lots of small files which, when opened in a text editor, contain e-mail text.
- cannot disable outbound e-mail scanning - you can un-tick the box but McAfee carries on scanning anyway. This doesn't sound too bad except when you find out that sometimes this scanning fails. You think the e-mail has been sent from Outlook but then later get a popup saying McAffee was unable to scan the file and the e-mail hasn't been sent. Very frustrating when you need to e-mail something and just can't get it to send because of McAfee. Solution - use webmail for any e-mails that fail to send!

1 out of 5 stars My system just ground to a halt   December 3, 2006

After swapping chats with McAfee who offered to e-mail me fixes and never did, I finally just removed the software from both of my PCs. Happily we're now back to a normal speed for everything! I've used Mcafee for anti virus for years and it's always been fine. Have decided to swtich to a simple Mcaffee virus checker.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent in parts - deeply flawed in others   November 11, 2006

We bought this program as long-term users of McAfee and Norton products, expecting general continuity from the previous product line. Boy were we in for a surprise!

Generally, the interface is greatly improved (and classier than Norton). The product is also WAY more comprehensive in approach than the competition - and perhaps that's its undoing. First, the basics:

The program is supplied on CD and loads pretty quickly. A standard installation includes the excellent 'Site Adviser', which grades every site you visit for security and interfaces with Google and Yahoo searches so that you know in advance whether to visit a site or not. That's a great product - but you can download it free of charge from www.mcafee.co.uk.

Virusscan now includes rootkit detection and anti-spam features, and both seem to work well (though those that use AVG anti-spyware may be surprised to see that it detects McAfee Privacy Service as spyware itself!). Updates are delivered at least daily and the user needs do nothing to receive these (except be connected to the web).

Anti-spam is provided as standard (unlike the peculiar Norton Internet Security 2007, which omits it completely), though the first time you run Outlook, you may have a VERY long wait if you have a full in-box. On a dual-core PC with 2GB of memory, McAfee took 20 minutes to open Outlook the first time we used it after installation. The reason was Antispam going through our 1,500 item in-box and assessing it all for spam. We had to reclassify 30 mis-identified items and then all was well and, in fairness, it's something you'll only do once. Still, you might like to do this when time is not critical!

There is extensive and very useful network protection, including graphical representation of the network and full security - whether wired or wireless.Parental controls are provided, though we found them less-than-intuitive in use, particularly given that there is no manual provided, and the help facility is so very poor (consisteing of little more than a glossary).

The real problem may come with Wireless Internet Security. Here, McAfee wireless protection claims to do it all, and it does - provided it is compatible with your router. The product takes over the management of your wireless web connection (from windows or intel) and protects it from unauthorised access from others. That's particularly good if you use WEP encryption, which is not very secure and can be broken by others, or if (for some reason) you don't use a protected network at the moment.

It keeps track of who is currently connected to your network and lets you know as they log-in and out. It generates pre-shared keys and automatically changes them after a set time (from 1 hour to 1 day), and is compatible with WEP, WPA and WPA2. So far, so good.

However, the box doesn't tell you that the wireless security part of the product isn't compatible with a lot (and I mean A LOT) of routers. We use Belkin, Netgear and Thomson (Speedtouch) routers and the ompatibility list is very patchy. We couldn't achieve compatibility with any version of the Netscape MIMO G router that is very popular at the moment, nor the Belkin Super-G. McAfee's product compunds this with error messages that are - to say the least - unhelpful, suggesting that we update the program from McAfee. Needless to say, that doesn't help at all.

If you intend to buy the product (and it's good when it works - we finally got a Speedtouch modem to work after updating its firmware), check at www.mcafee.com first - there is a list of all compatible modems and firmwares. Don't assume that because you have a popular modem that it will just work - our experience is that the more recent and popular a modem is, the less likelihood that the wireless security part of the software will work.

We had a number of post-installation issues, with the web-update facility refusing to install new updates after a few days. The solution was to download a new version of the software from www.mcafee.com, which fixed the issue. Beware, however - we could only do this because we had registered the program. McAfee's on-line help service is very good, howevere, allowing instant message chats with a technician (again much better than the competition).

Overall, we found the product very comprehensive, and much better than the current Norton offering, but with a number of flaws. Our suggestion is to check compatibility lists on the web before making a decision to install the wireless web security component (you can choose not to install it).
