2 out of 5 stars Mostly flaky and unusable but some parts work well   April 15, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I've been using Nero for many years, mainly for burning audio cds. I guess I would qualify as a satisfied and loyal customer.
Recently though I have been using Nero 7 for video capture, editing and burning (it came bundled with my Asustek Hybrid DVB-T tuner card). The capture is bad as it uses such a high cpu usage (75-90% as opposed to 30% with Cyberlink). Jerky and out of sync sound make it unusable at any resolution. The software keeps wanting to connect to the analogue part of the card rather than the DVB-T part and has to be manually connected at each use. The audio configuration menu is always greyed out.
One dvd edited on Nero Vision had the first half with interlaced fields swapped whereas the second half (recorded and edited in the same session) was ok.
When editing, finding the edit point with a drag and place pointer leads to a very time consuming and frustrating exercise. Not user friendly at all.
Nero Home is a bit of a joke - it looks good but does not come close to being classed as usable.
Nero wave editor is very good and compares well with Sound Forge which I have used for years.
So if you buy Nero 7, do not expect it all to work, but if you can use the bits that do it may well be useful. It seems that Nero has not quite mastered video technology to a usable standard.
Given this overall flakiness, I would not hold out much hope for Nero 8 and would certainly not buy it.
The forums are full of criticism for recent Nero releases, with Nero Vision coming in for the greatest mauling. Updated versions are worse than earlier ones, with posters advising older versions be installed. My experience over the past month seems to confirm this.

5 out of 5 stars Nero 7 Premium Reloaded (PC)   January 7, 2008

Bought January 2007 ... a little late in adding my comments!

Excellent product with easy to use unlimited audio to mp3 conversion facilty.

Great online support and many free updates available for this program .. have updated lots of times over the year.

Unless you require the newer features available with Nero 8 ..
I would recommend Nero 7 Premium Reloaded if available around 30 or less.

2 out of 5 stars Getting Worse   November 20, 2007

In addition to my last review-the program has got worse-To be fair, certain aspects of it still work ok (Burning Rom gives no coasters) but Nero Vision seems to have entered a black hole with no chance of return. Not sure if these things do depreciate with time but the program cant seem to handle simple fades now. At one time I discovered, if you create chapters first on your footage and then added fades and transitions, things seemed to behave. Now, chapters, fades, transitions seem to cause Nero vision to have a break down and I am soon to follow. Ahead told me buy Nero 8-I said "Why?" Seems thats their answer to a problem-Buy the next version. A lot of other programs I use allow the user free updates but not Ahead-everything they do costs money and there is always something that doesn't work-till the next paid update and for every one thing thats fixed-something else is messed up. The only thing good about this software is Nero Burning Rom.
