I switched to BitDefender from using various versions of Norton software, and couldn't believe I hadn't made the change. The program works perfectly, virus scans go further, it is much easier to use and is completely unnoticeable after the first few days due to the fact it runs completely in the background and doesn't slow down your PC to any great extent - I would say not at all, as thats how it feels, but thats probably not completely true.
As for the one star review from "pfpurser", the reason he experienced problems was that he had clearly failed to recognise that BitDefender has its own firewall, and that he should have uninstalled ZoneAlarm and deactivated the Microsoft firewall as running two at once causes the problems he described. So long as you recognise that BitDefender is the complete package you will have no problems with it in the slightest.

I like previous reviewers had been a loyal Norton Interent security (NIS) user since 2002. However, since I upgraded to NIS 2007 this bloatware has twice wreacked my PC, forcing 2 hard disk reformats and re-installation of Win XP pro on a 2 year-old Dell PC. I switched over to Bitdefender IS v 10 and my PC has come to life again ! With NIS 2007 runing on a vey old Sony laptop (over 4 years old), the laptop would take ages to start and reading/sending emails with Outlook was a "make a cup of tea while you wait" chore. The Dell with NIS 2007 was much fater, but NIS 2007 caused numerous crashes. With BitDefender IS v10's 2 year 2-user licence (ALL for much less than NIS 2007) I have regained a fast PC and the laptop is like a new machine. Bitdefender does EXACTLY what it says (managed to find 10 viruses / trojons that NIS 2007 completely failed to detect on my systems!) Bitdefender does it job, QUICKLY, quietly and without the "bells and whistles" of NIS 2007. THIS is what internet security should be like. Also, have a wireless LAN setup, no problems with BitDefender IS 10, it was a breeze, much easier that the NIS 2007 aclaimed easy setup (my foot!).
So far, both my systems have been using Bitdefender for 2 months without a problem, if it had been NIS2007, I would be reformatting my hard disk right now! NIS 2007 was so bad, that even though I had more than 6 months left on NIS 2007 subscription, I trashed it, never to return. Best choice I made.
If you want a nice looking piece of software then buy NIS 2007, but if you want an internet security system that works, get Bitdefender.
You don't need to read this review to see the difference in NIS 2007, just look at the price. I paid nearly 40 in October 2006 for NIS 2007 "Upgrade", just look at the price for NIS 2007 now less than 23 !! Norton are feeling the pressure from the likes of BitDefender.

After several years trouble-free working with Norton Antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall on my computer I decided to install BitDefender Antivirus instead of Norton on the strength of a glowing review of,and No1 recommendation for, this product by PC World.
I followed all the Bitdefender instructions about eliminating other antivirus, and antispyware, products before installing BitDefender Antivirus but immediately after doing so my Zone Alarm firewall ceased to function so I uninstalled that and connected to the Microsoft firewall.
Thereafter my computer gradually became unusable; from an intial slowing down to unauthorised changes being made to my settings, to a final crash on 9th May (one month after installing BitDefender).
A professional computer expert had to strip down my computer hard drive and reinstall all my previous settings with a complete security package from AVG, after which my computer came back to life with enhanced facilities. This cost me 150.
The only thing I can say in mitigation for BitDefender is that they have agreed to refund the 20 I initially paid them for the privilege of installing their product. But I am still over 100 out-of-pocket overall.
BE WARNED, both of dire consequenses of installing BitDefender Antivirus, and also of the folly of relying on recommendations made by PC World.

Although I haven't used Bitdefender 10, I have used the 9th version in the form of a 6month trial and I have to say I am very impressed at the reliability and no-nonsense approach towards it. Unlike the 6 moth trial of Kaperspy I have now, it doesn't ge in the way with annoying messages every second. It also runs very quietly in the background causing pretty much no slowdown. From the service I have had from Bitdefender Internet Security 9, I will probably sometime in the future buy this product
