Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mister, get a copy of Vista...   January 13, 2008
Been running this since it was pre-installed on my new laptop in October last year and much to my amazement, I've had ZERO problems. No crashes, no freezing, no wierd stuff. Yeah, difficult to believe, I know. Truth is, Vista has handled everything I've thrown at it without even breaking into a sweat. Windows Update keeps it all purring like a pussy cat without my even thinking about it. There's much improved security, lots of new easier to use features, and it looks great, too. If all you need is a solid OS and don't give a rats about the fancy and graphically intensive stuff in the Premium edition, get this. Wouldn't like to run it on less than a gig of RAM though. Good job, Microsoft.

4 out of 5 stars A fairly basic offering of the latest operating system.   January 11, 2008

There are four versions of Widows Vista available to the public:
*Home Basic
*Home Premium
*Business
*Ultimate
Each version offers a different set of options with ultimate offering all options and a little bit more.
This edition is Home Basic which is the most basic of the product suite; the nice new Aero interface is not available. This would make a good choice if your computer is not up to the requirements standard for the other editions but you wanted to get the latest security enhancements. It provides all your basic home computing needs if you only need to use your home pc for tasks like browsing the internet, word processing, using e-mail and viewing pictures then this could be the right version. The enhanced security features will help protect your system from unwanted intrusion.
One aspect to be aware of before upgrading to windows vista is some manufacturers have not released drivers for this platform yet, you should check with their websites before upgrading to vista to avoid disappointment.

1 out of 5 stars Don't "upgrade" to this if you can possibly avoid   September 16, 2007

Home basic - yes, it's basic. Lots of features found in other versions of Vista are disabled in this version - they're on the disc but you can't access them without an "upgrade". It will run in 512MB - cripplingly slowly if you have more than any 2 apps up at the same time. That is also without shared video RAM - of which Vista needs 128MB so you end up with only 384MB of system RAM available making the macine even slooooower. The sidebar interface is a gimmick at best, a waste of screen space at worst.

Vista has multiple driver problems. If you have any hardware over about 2 years old then it is very likely that there may not be a Vista driver available. The machine that I have just been asked to install this on now is almost useless except for running MS Office. The Epson Scanner, Brother Printer and Canon cameras won't talk to the machine at all and the HP printer only works in BW!

The security functions are prohibitive, often having to click on 5 - 6 check boxes to do simple tasks as Vista asks "Are you sure" followed by "warning!!!" followed by "are you really sure?" then "you can't do this because ..." followed by "warning!!!" followed by "are you sure" follwed by "OK, I might let you do it just this once". The new version of explorer is not very instinctive either.

5 out of 5 stars Good Basic Operating System   August 21, 2007

Arrived on time and in good condition.

I think there is only two choices for most of us either Vista Basic or Vista Premium. Here's a quick bit of advise.

Vista Basic requires 512Mb memory to run.
Some graphics effects are disabled and no Media Centre.
Good choice if your PC is lacking in performance.

Vista Premium requires 1Gb memory to run.
More advanced graphics effects are included on the desktop, it will slow down your machine a little but looks pretty.
Media Centre is included.
Best package to go for if your machine is decent.

So Vista Basic at the price I paid is excellant value, it was for an old machine so a good choice for me. Windows XP was 5 more so it's a no brainer.
